As public and private jurisdictions rely more heavily on computer systems and digital domains for their daily operations, the threat that Cyber Security poses is greater than ever for the security of information and enterprises as a whole. As a result, skilled individuals who are able to uphold the security of information systems will play an important role in the future of these enterprise operations.

The Texas Engineering Extension Service (TEEX) Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Grant Funded Cyber Security courses can provide you with the skills needed to make the most of new opportunities in this emerging field.

Develop Your Skillset
These courses are available at no cost.  Ten courses are offered through three specific tracks for the non-technical computer users, business managers/professionals, and technical Information Technology (IT) professionals. The General/Non-Technical Track addresses the basic principles and practices that computer users need to keep themselves safe at work and at home. Additionally, it includes the ethical and legal practices affecting all computer users. The Managers and Business Professionals Track provides training in implementation and management of a business information continuity plan, assessment and mitigation of cyber vulnerabilities, and incident response and analysis. The Technical/IT Professional Track is intended for students with technical knowledge of computers, operating systems and networks. These courses train users to secure computers, applications, and networks.  Training in the basics of digital forensics is also provided.
Throughout these courses, you'll learn about relevant concepts and practices that are used to maintain security and fight off the threat of cyber-crime.  You'll study the role of computer security incident response, cyber forensic investigations, and how these roles need to be managed and organized in order to effectively provide their services in your enterprise.

Advantages of an Online Program

Freedom Awards: Nominate an employer who shows extraordinary support of National Guard & Reserve

About the Freedom Award
The Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award is the highest recognition given by the U.S. Government to employers for their support of their employees who serve in the Guard and Reserve.
Nominations must come from a Guard or Reserve member who is employed by the organization they are nominating, or from a family member.
The award was created to publicly recognize employers who provide exceptional support to their Guard and Reserve employees. It is the highest in a series of employer recognition awards given by the Department of Defense.
Almost one-half of the U.S. military is comprised of the Guard and Reserve. The Department of Defense shares these citizen warriors with their civilian employers, many of whom provide significant support to their employees who serve in the Guard and Reserve. This award recognizes employers who provide the most outstanding support for their Guard and Reserve employees and is presented annually by the Secretary of Defense.
The nomination process is open to all Guard and Reserve personnel and their families and applications are submitted online to ESGR. A national selection board comprised of senior Defense officials and business leaders selects the award recipients.
Who is eligible to nominate?

Any Guard or Reserve service member can nominate their employer. If a service member does not have access to submit a nomination, a family member can nominate the service member’s employer on their behalf.

Who is eligible to receive the award?

Small, large (500+) and public employers can be nominated. The employer MUST be the service member’s current employer. Nominations for friends, family, schools, stores, etc. that are not the service member’s employer will not be considered.

Combat Veterans & Law Enforcement: A Transition Guide for Vets Beginning or Continuing Careers in Law Enforcement

Military veteran? You’ve served your country, now serve your community!

Military service can be a perfect entrance into a law enforcement career. While military police and security forces may have the most directly applicable skill set, service members from a variety of occupational specialties are also well suited to police service.

Additionally, your law enforcement training may allow you to take advantage of the Veteran’s Administration (VA’s) On-The-Job-Training (OJT) program. This program allows veterans to use their G.I. Bill benefit as an income supplement while attending the academy. This can add hundreds of tax-free dollars on top of your trainee pay. Some agencies will even help process your paperwork with the nearest VA office.

If you're a military veteran, visit DiscoverPolicing.org's Veteran Page (where the above text is taken from) to learn more about why a law enforcement career might be right for you.

The International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) in partnership with the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Justice Programs, Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA), has published a guidebook for servicemembers who are transitioning out of the military and are considering a law enforcement career. Developed from interviews and focus groups with military veterans serving in law enforcement, “Combat Veterans & Law Enforcement: A Transition Guide for Veterans Beginning or Continuing Careers in Law Enforcement,” shares experiences and tips for veterans as they transition from deployment to a law enforcement career. A comprehensive list of support agencies and networks available to veterans is also included.

How can veterans transition to civilian careers? 15 tips

By Nicholas Head

After serving your country, a few tips can make transitioning to civilian careers easier.  Here’s fifteen.
  1. Being in transition usually means that getting to the other shore involves some choppy water.  Up’s and down’s are typical.  It’s how it is.

  2. Get a good planner.  (I like plannerpads.com).  Fill each week with activities, and follow your plan.   Keep a dated notebook to log EVERYTHING relevant to your job hunt or career exploration.

  3. Get busy every day.  Volunteering gets you busy and being seen doing good is a great introduction.

  4. Find an “accountability buddy” — someone who’ll support your efforts and challenge you when you slack up

  5. Ask for help.  Everyone needs help to be a success.  Don’t like asking for help? Get over it.

  6. Don’t let emotional baggage color your job hunt or derail your interview.   If this is you, lighten your load.

  7. Lots of people would like to support your success.  Other veterans, family, old friends, neighbors, church members, and sports teams.  Make it easy to find you.  Get their business cards.  Follow-up.

  8. Dress, most of the time, like you would for an interview.  Get and use feedback from anybody with credibility.

  9. Have a basic business card so others can get back to you. (Free, or almost, from Vistaprint.com)  Put your name, phone, address and email address on it.  On Facebook or LinkedIn?  Put that on your card too.

  10. Inexpensive on-line assessments can help you clarify your strengths (StrengthsFinder 2.0) motivations (Values in Action Survey), temperament (Keirsey Temperament Sorter) and fields of interest (SelfDirectedSearch.com)   Highlight what most rings true for you.

  11. Visit the Department of Labor’s one-stop, veterans-employment website (http://www.fedshirevets.gov/)

  12. Use job boards. Author Richard Bolles has a site (http://www.jobhuntersbible.com).  Resumes, networking,  job hunting and career exploration.  Much more.

  13. Explore “Job-Hunt” (http://www.job-hunt.org/); specific help for veterans at http://www.job-hunt.org/veterans-job-search/veterans-job-search.shtml

  14. Research the job market, at the Bureau of Labor Statistics (http://www.bls.gov/). The Occupational Outlook Handbook provides information on common jobs, duties, pay, trends and training needed.

  15. Persist.  They used to say the job hunt is a hundred no’s before a yes.  In a tough economy it can take more.  It’s a march, a marathon, not a sprint.   It’s worth it.
Get connected.  The world needs what you have to offer.  Here’s wishing you all success going forward.

Veteran Careers: Top 5 Jobs For Ex-Military Personnel

The US military is arguably the best-trained workforce in the world, and personnel who leave military service have skills that translate to virtually any career.

Here’s a look at five popular jobs that give the men and women who’ve served our country an opportunity to make a difference and move up.

1.Information Technology Specialist
Former members of the military have worked with some of the most advanced technology in the world. They can use that hands-on experience in a civilian capacity as an IT professional.

According to the US Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics, “Computer scientists and database administrators are expected to be among the fastest growing occupations through 2014.”

In addition to enjoying a demand for your services, you can also exercise your entrepreneurial side as an IT specialist and become a certified contractor.

2. Police Officer
Former military personnel hold a special place in the heart of police department recruiters across the U.S. The qualities of a great police officer are virtually identical to those of a great soldier: Both have a desire to serve their country and community and protect people and their rights.

A career as a law-enforcement professional may appeal to those with military service because there are a variety of departments and specialties to pursue, not unlike the military.

Because vets are in such high demand, many police departments offer hiring perks, including extra points on the entrance exam, an age deduction from the maximum age limit, GI Bill benefits, retirement perks and more.

3. Math or Science Teacher
Former military personnel with technology backgrounds can make wonderful teachers, as they are familiar with maintaining order and instilling a sense of pride in others.

And being a teacher has other rewards: generous vacation time (including summers off), opportunities to earn extra income through tutoring or by teaching additional classes, and coaching.

4. Entrepreneur
According to SCORE, a nonprofit partner with the US Small Business Administration that dispenses free business advice, almost one in four US veterans buys or launches a new business or is seriously considering it.
Many ex-military members thrive through discipline. It’s also a quality that every business owner needs for her company to survive its first few years and become a viable operation.

From franchising to starting a company from scratch, there are many ways for military personnel to pursue entrepreneurship.

Visit score.org and eauth.com to learn about additional opportunities and resources just for veterans.

5. Civilian Public Service
People who have served in the military may be drawn to continue their career in public service. In fact, certain veterans will receive hiring preference over civilians when applying for federal jobs. You can find out more by visiting the Office of Personnel Management.

“Not coincidentally, many people who leave the service head to Washington, DC,” says John Challenger, of Challenger, Gray and Christmas, a global outplacement firm. “There’s a large community of military personnel there as well as opportunity.” In fact, 16 percent of federal jobs are based there. “There’s a bond there that’s similar to those of fraternities or sororities, and that bond can be very valuable in a job search,” he adds.

The above list is just a start. People who have served in the military have a vast array of transferable skills that they can leverage to continue careers in their chosen fields.
