Are you so flattered when a recruiter rings you that you forget to ask them critical questions? Take this quiz to see if you’re covering your bases. By Andres Sobel

Here are 10 questions to ask a recruiter and one question to avoid. See if you can figure out which is which. (Answer at bottom.)

Emailing Your Resume by Schlinger, Robin - Mar, 2016

Everyone is emailing resumes these days—but are they doing it correctly? Here are a few rules to follow when you are emailing your resume.

•Send your resume in the format requested in the job posting. Usually this will be Word or .txt format (not .pdf unless specifically requested).

•Make sure you are using the correct email address. If you make any mistake in the recipient’s address, the email will not arrive—and you may not be notified.

•Do not send unsolicited emails to random addresses (for example, CEO@company.com). Most companies have software that will bar you from reaching that address and most employees are well aware of the dangers of opening unsolicited email.

•Check the job posting for information on what to put in the subject line of the email.

•If the job posting does not give directions about the subject line, include the position ID or name (for example, “Resume for Junior Accountant Position”).

•Write a professional cover email and include the same content as you would in a cover letter. The rule here is that a cover email might not be read but a blank email or one filled with emoticons is not professional.

•Make sure your content information is included in your email just as it appears on your resume.

•Send your email from a professional email address (for example, jjones@yahoo.com), not the one you use for friends and family (for example, dudeandbabe@yahoo.com).

•Do not send multiple, daily follow-up emails. The rule here favors the employer over the job applicant. You can contact the company after a week or so to make sure they received your resume—but if the job posting stated you should wait to hear from them, then you should simply wait and assume that you didn’t get the job if you don’t hear.

Artist Competition

The United States Mint is pleased to share official information about the 2018 World War I American Veterans Centennial Commemorative Coin Design Competition. We invite you to visit a dedicated landing page – www.usmint.gov/competition – where you can access the rules, schedule and details on how to enter. The Mint began accepting submissions for the first phase of the competition on February 29, 2016, and will continue to do so through April 28, 2016, though the Mint reserves the right to end the acceptance of submissions early if 1,000 entries are received.

As an organization that values the diversity of its people and products, we hope you will help spread the word about this opportunity to design a commemorative coin that will pay tribute to the bravery, actions and sacrifices of Americans during the country’s involvement in World War I almost 100 years ago. The winner will not only have his or her initials on the final coin, but will also receive a $10,000 prize.

We hope that you will encourage your members, students or patrons to apply – or perhaps apply yourself. Be sure to visit this site, and follow the United States Mint on Twitter or Facebook for reminders and updates. If you’d like to be added to our email distribution, please send an email request to WorldWarOne@usmint.treas.gov.

We hope that many individuals will participate. If you have any questions or thoughts about how to support the competition, please feel free to send an email to WordlWarOne@usmint.treas.gov.

Veterans Initiative in the Arts, grant opportunity

VIA provides project and partnership support for nonprofit arts organizations, local arts agencies, and veteran’s assistance agencies to reach veterans, active military, and their families.

In our final push prior to the program deadline of March 24, 2016, I wanted to be sure that you each had our program flyer and 2016 program Guidelines on hand, as there may be organizations and communities that come to mind which may benefit from this funding.

I’m providing a link below to our program page, as well as a recently released video featuring the work of a grantee from our 2014-15 pilot year.
