National Veterans Foundation

Veteran Service Officers will help you navigate the DVA’s bureaucracy, and their services are free. They will help with gathering the information necessary to support a claim, filing the claim, and tracking the claim through the VA system. They can also assist with filing appeals for denied claims.

We strongly recommend that you make use of the services provided by Veteran Service Officers. Their expertize can help you avoid the pitfalls and delays that missing paperwork or improperly filled out claim forms can cause.

As a convenience, we have provided direct links to the service organizations with nationwide networks, and to the State offices that provide claim representation. You can use those links to find Veteran Service Officers near you. Alternatively, you can call us at 888 777-4443 and we will help you locate a VSO.

Veteran Service Organizations

The VA maintains  a complete listing of Veteran Service Organizations that provide claim representation. You can see a complete listing the VA’s website here. If you already have an ongoing relationship with one of those organizations, we suggest you contact them for information about local representatives.

Free Wills Clinic for Veterans Who Live in NYC

The Veterans Assistance Project (VAP) and the Elderlaw Project (ELP)  at the City Bar Justice Center (the not-for-profit section of the New York City Bar Association) has recently initiated wills clinics for Veterans.  The program provides free estate planning assistance for eligible Veterans.  The next clinic is scheduled for Wednesday, November 9, 2016 at 2:00p.m. in midtown Manhattan.

This service is available to low- to moderate-income Veterans who reside in NYC and are interested in preparing any of the following documents at no cost:

·         Last Will and Testament – Allows you to leave instructions about how your property should be distributed after your death. It also allows people with responsibility for minor children to name a guardian to care for them.
·         Health Care Proxy – Allows you to choose someone (your ‘Agent’) to make medical decisions on your behalf if your condition prevents you from communicating your wishes to your doctor. Your Agent will speak for you.
·         Living Will – If your condition is such that there is no hope of recovery, this document allows you to state your wishes about life sustaining treatment (e.g. breathing tubes, feeding tubes, etc).
·         Power of Attorney Allows you to name an Agent to handle your non-medical matters, e.g. banking, housing decisions and taxes.
·         Disposition of Remains document Allows you to name an Agent to handle your funeral and burial arrangements.

Veterans interested in attending the clinic should contact us to check eligibility by calling: 212-382-4743.

If eligible, the Veteran will be paired up with an attorney at the clinic who will prepare the document(s) free of cost.
