Topanga Women’s Circle, CA 90290 Helping Homeless Veterans and Their Families into Transitional Housing

Topanga Women’s Circle Helping Homeless Veterans and Their Families into Transitional Housing

We work in Los Angeles to set up apartments for Veterans and families moving from homelessness into Transitional Housing.
When a family moves into these institutionally furnished apartments they generally have all their belonging in a garbage bag. But just before they move in TWC springs into action, transforming a bare-bones space into a home.

Please click on the donation link below and give whatever you can. Your donation will be doubled until we reach our goal.

Homeless Veteran in need @ The Samaritan Center, 280 Royal Ave, Simi Valley, CA 93065

Honorably discharged Marine Corps Vietnam Vet, '64-68.

His only income is SSI.

Renee' Frumkin from the Samaritan Center  has been assisting him for the past 1 1/2 years.  In that time, the Center has assisted him with obtaining his VA cash voucher.  Mr. Kims voucher ultimately expired and he was unable to find housing in Simi Valley.

Mr. Kims has now obtained another cash voucher and will have a limited time in which to find housing.  They found an apartment complex in Camarillo but is was discovered when his credit was ran that he owes money to a collection agency.  At this time they're concerned for Mr. Kims' health as he is on dialysis and will continue to be for the rest of his life.

The apartment complex has stated that if the arrears is paid off that Mr. Kimes can have the studio apartment. Therefore, the Samaritan Center is trying to partner with other agencies to pay the arrears of $1,068.

If an individual or group is interesting in helping, they can contact:

Howard County Housing, Maryland Extends Application Deadline for “A Hero’s Welcome Home” Veterans Only Lottery

ELLICOTT CITY, MD – In honor of Veteran’s Day, Howard County Housing has extended the deadline for a new initiative that will allow a service-disabled veteran to purchase a newly constructed home offering a unique blend of affordability, green features and universal design in Howard County.

“We are excited to extend this housing opportunity for our military veterans, “said Howard County Executive Ken Ulman. “Our veterans have already given so much and so it is our duty to make sure they experience the quality of life in Howard that we are working hard to build.”

Located at 8815 Glenrobbin Place in Jessup, the craftsman style home is the last available three-bedroom home in the Cottages at Greenwood community. The home will be sold through a lottery to a qualified and eligible veteran for a purchase price of $252,300. The lottery winner will be eligible to receive down-payment and closing-cost assistance of up to $40,000 through the Howard County Settlement Downpayment Loan Program.

The Cottages at Greenwood is a groundbreaking community developed by Howard County Housing, in partnership with The Stavrou Companies and Hamel Builders that features one-story, Craftsman-style homes certified as LEED Platinum by the U.S. Green Building Council. Each home is comprised of three bedrooms, two baths and 1,300 square feet of living space designed to provide accessibility and eliminate physical barriers. Among the many features that make the homes sustainable and energy efficient are: tankless hot water heater, solar tubes, Energy Star appliances, low-flow plumbing fixtures and orientation that maximizes solar benefits and energy conservation.

To be eligible for the lottery, veterans must have a verifiable service-connected disability of at least 30%. Minimum household income of $48,000 is needed to qualify to purchase the home; maximum household income limits also apply.

Lottery applications, details on prequalification requirements and a list of approved lenders and open house dates are available online atwww.howardcountymd.gov/veteranhousing.htm. For more information or questions, please contact Lisa Jenkins at lwjenkins@howardcountymd.gov or 410 313-6343. Applications are also available at the Howard County Housing office located at 6751 Columbia Gateway Drive, 3rd floor in Columbia.

The deadline for applications is Friday, November 14, and the lottery will be held on Tuesday, November 18 at 4:30 p.m. at the George Howard Building, 3430 Court House Drive in Ellicott City.

HUD Project Scoring Panel: Call for Volunteers

Sacramento, CA Steps Forward needs your help!

Sacramento Steps Forward needs your help!  Please see the message below regarding the opportunity to participate in reviewing and scoring project applications for new projects and the past performance of certain federally-funded homeless housing and services projects (HUD Continuum of Care Homeless Assistance grants).  The panel will rank programs and recommend programs for funding.

If you've already responded to this call for volunteers, thank you!  You'll hear from HomeBase as soon as HUD opens the competition and meeting dates can be determined.

Sacramento Steps Forward Calls for Volunteers!

Serve your community and influence homeless housing and services
in Sacramento!
Our community is working hard to address homelessness; this is your chance to contribute to a solution!

Who:
Anyone with an interest in homelessness-related issues in Sacramento, including local government employees, service providers, current and formerly homeless individuals, or community members, especially those who have experience funding or providing homeless housing or services.
No prior experience in evaluating programs is necessary.

However, panelists must not have a conflict of interest. Panel members must not have any affiliation with (e.g. be employed by, a client of, consultant to, etc.) any of the programs that the panel will evaluate.  If you think you may have a conflict, we will be happy to let you know whether you qualify to serve on the panel.

What:
Participate in reviewing and scoring project applications for new projects and the past performance of certain federally-funded homeless housing and services projects (HUD Continuum of Care Homeless Assistance grants).  The
panel will rank programs and recommend programs for funding.

When:
In late July, August or September, panelists will attend a two-hour training and will receive project materials, which they will have approximately one to two weeks to read and consider.  Panelists will then meet for up to two days to discuss and score the programs.  All told, panelists should plan to spend about 30 hours on this project.

Why:
Because homelessness concerns everyone in our community!  We need your help to prepare the application for the millions of dollars in federal funding that makes these homeless housing and services projects available to the most vulnerable among us.

Important Note:
Volunteering now is NOT a final commitment.  We are thrilled that you're interested in helping, and we will contact you soon (once HUD announces dates) with final dates to confirm your availability and that you are not conflicted.

Thank you for your consideration and service!

Please forward this email to others that may be interested.

Please do not hesitate to contact Homebase, the organization that facilitates this process, if you have any questions or are interested in volunteering.
