Do you want to help homeless veterans?

Do you know someone who has or is serving our country in the military? Can you imagine what you would think if they were homeless? Most Americans would find the situation of homeless veterans to be mentally and emotionally jarring.

If you feel like most Americans, the Sacramento Stand Down needs your help.

For the past 22 years, approximately 350 homeless veterans have received vital assistance at the Sacramento Stand Down on a three-day weekend in mid-September.

A “stand down” is a historic military term for a place behind the front lines of combat where an exhausted war fighter gets medical attention, hot meals, and sleeps off the ground while temporarily recuperating from the rigors of military conflict.

The Sacramento Stand Down is similar to the “stand downs” in prior wars, this time with veterans receiving vital services while sheltered from the hostilities of street.

We have a goal of finding up to 925 volunteers to operate a three-day Stand Down. There are many different jobs during the year as well as a wide variety of four-to-eight hour shifts on September 11 – 14 (Thursday – Sunday).

This position will serve as part of a comprehensive team of health care professionals providing high quality outpatient care and emergency services in the Onsite OHS Health Center. Assist in the management of patients seen at the center, both during clinic session and management after clinic. Provide patient education regarding disease processes, medications, etc. and develop educational material.

Responsibilities

• Identifies patient care requirements by establishing personal rapport with potential and actual patients and other persons in a position to understand care requirements

• Assures quality of care by adhering to therapeutic standards; measuring health outcomes against patient care goals and standards; making or recommending necessary adjustments; following hospital and nursing division’s philosophies and standards of care set by state board of nursing, state nurse practice act, and other governing agency regulations

• Resolves patient problems and needs by utilizing multidisciplinary team strategies

• Maintains safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations; calling for assistance from health care support personnel

• Protects patients and employees by adhering to infection-control policies and protocols, medication administration and storage procedures, and controlled substance regulations

• Documents patient care services by charting in patient and department records

• Completes any and all triage duties as needed

• Ensures operation of equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements; following manufacturer’s instructions; troubleshooting malfunctions; calling for repairs; maintaining equipment inventories; evaluating new equipment and techniques

• Serves as a resource in a team environment

• Provide emergency services and coverage for all defined client personnel

• Work efficiently with EMR system

• Other duties as assigned

Requirements

• Current nursing license required

• Nursing registration required

• BLS certification required

• ACLS certification required

• ITLS, PHTLS, ATLS, or similar required

• A minimum of five (5) years’ experience as a nurse

• Knowledge of professional standards of care

• Ability to establish and maintain effective relationship with others.

• Ability to effectively communicate in English orally and in writing

• Basic computer skills

• Should have experience on deployed contingency operations or similar medical experience

The White Plains Vet Center, located on 300 Hamilton Avenue, White Plains, NY is offering veterans who have served in combat in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom, & New Dawn an exciting opportunity to display their artwork in common areas within the Vet Center.

The artwork/photographs/paintings/sculptures/poems etc. are not required to be military related. The purpose is to proudly display artwork created by OIF/OEF/OND veterans, for veterans and their families to enjoy and appreciate.

Veterans in Transition

The little boy had cerebral palsy, and the doctor told his parents that he would never walk.

But, in true American style, they never gave up hope. While Staff Sgt. Jeremy Cooney was deployed, his wife, Melissa, worked in secret to help little Michael walk on his own. The look on the returning Marine’s face when his son walks without assistance to meet him is absolutely priceless.

When the Army Refused to Commission this Woman, She Went and Earned the Medal of Honor Instead

This story is as unique as they come. It involves a woman who was ahead of her time in many ways, who offered herself in service of the nation voluntarily during the Civil War and won the nation’s highest military honor, the Medal of Honor. She is first and only woman to have been awarded the Medal of Honor in our nation’s entire history.

From the Family Farm to the Front Lines

Her name was Mary Edwards Walker. She was born in Oswego, New York on November 26 1832. She was the youngest of five daughters and had a younger brother. She was educated at the school her mother taught at and later taught there herself to earn money to be able to attend medical school at Syracuse Medical College. She married a fellow medical student and upon graduation they set up a medical practice together in Rome, NY. Because she was female and female doctors, at the time, were not trusted or respected by the general population, their practice did not flourish. Their marriage ended in divorce after thirteen years.

When the Civil War broke out, Mary Edwards Walker went immediately to Washington, D.C. and tried to get a military commission as a doctor in the Union Army. She was denied, of course, because she was a woman. She volunteered anyway and was given a position as an assistant surgeon as a civilian contractor. Throughout her service, she was never paid, even though she served on the front lines and in hospitals in some of the wars most harrowing battles. She was at the battle of Chickamauga among many others.

During her time she also acted as a spy for the Union. While doing this, she was captured by Confederate troops and was held as a prisoner of war for the last four months of the Civil War. When the war ended she tried, again, to get a military commission, but was again denied. But in November of 1865, she was awarded the Medal of Honor by President Andrew Johnson. The citation read, in part, “She devoted herself with much patriotic zeal to the sick and wounded soldiers, both in the field and hospitals, to the detriment of her own health. She has endured hardships as a prisoner of war for four months in a Southern prison.” With this, she became the first — and the last — woman ever to receive the Medal of Honor. So far.

Sharon Harris authored a book about Mary Edwards Walker entitled Dr. Mary Walker: An American Radical, 1832-1919, in which she writes, “She wore that medal every day of her life from the moment she received it to the day she died.” But this story takes a turn in 1917, that Mary Walker would meet with her usual, inimical confidence and toughness of nature.

A Force to Be Reckoned With

In 1917, over 50 years after she had been awarded the Medal of Honor, a high ranking military board decided to change the criteria for that medal. They changed the criteria so it would be awarded to only those who had been in actual combat with the enemy. As a result, they rescinded almost 1,000 of the medals, including hers. In accord with her nature, she refused to send it back. As was said before, she wore it until the day she died. Her award would be reinstated some 60 years later in 1977 by an act of Congress.

Mary Edwards Walker was a force to be reckoned with throughout her life. After the Civil War she was involved with the Women’s Suffrage Movement and Prohibition. She would die in 1919 at the age of 87.

Three soldiers in the British Army collaborated with two U.S. Soldiers in order to beautifully perform a song dedicated to troops around the world. The song ‘Coming Home’ is a message of support to all service members who are representing their country with pride.
