Military-Civilian Service
Just one link that we send the job postings to, how they can get viewed by so many viewer with just one email and how jobs can get matched up with potential candidates

Good Morning,

I thank you for sharing all of these job postings.  With electronic job postings, we are easily able to distribute among our clients via e-mail.  We have over 200 veterans, spouses and DOD clients on our e-mail distribution list, as well as, four other veterans representatives in the metro area that we share these listings with.  All together, these jobs reach over 1000 military veterans, spouses and DOD members in our metro community who are currently seeking employment.

I also thank you for receiving and forwarding resumes of qualified candidates to the recruiters/hiring officials for consideration.  Before posting each job out on our distro list, I try to match potential clients based on their skills sets to current job openings in the area.  I believe this is a much better way for employers to screen through applicants than to just post jobs on job search engines such as indeed.com.  Our method offers a smaller, more qualified pool of candidates to choose from and are all somehow related to the military, whether veteran, spouse, dependent or DOD civilian; several candidates being dual vet and spouse and many 30% or more disabled vets.

I appreciate your continuing support to our Army Employment Readiness Program and hope that together, we can help our military have a smooth transition into their civilian careers.

Retiring from the military and looking for a job can be humbling. After a highly successful career where I excelled at nearly every junction of military service, I suddenly was looking for a new place to go every day. When you have spent your entire adult life contributing to the mission of the US military, it is quite an adjustment to have to seek out gainful, meaningful employment.
Lesson in Resume Editing
I found myself applying for everything from emergency management jobs with the Federal Emergency Management Agency to assistant manager jobs at ToysRUs. Although I had been taught in the Air Force (AF) Transition Assistance Program seminar to have a different version of my resume for each job description, I somehow thought my resume would 'walk on water'. I didn't have the patience to actually edit my resume to fit each job description. Later I would learn how much that approach is mistaken.
Networking Versus Job Web Sites
Since I had worked as a part time local radio station deejay for the last two years of my military career, I figured my first job would come as a result of networking. I was well known in the community and loved attending civilian events to promote the radio station. However, all of my leads led to nowhere. My first job came as a result of using the Careerbuilder website (www.careerbuilder.com).
Within a short time of hitting the Careerbuilder button for a recruiting position, I received a call from a recruiter for a job with a defense contracting firm. As I started my recruiting job, I would soon learn much about altering resumes to fit job descriptions. Only by doing so can people have a prayer regarding gaining employment. With a tough economy the competition can be very intense. Since employers use word searches from job descriptions, matching the resume with job description is paramount . If a person hasn't tailored their resume to fit those key words, their resume will likely never be seen by an actual human being.
Great Fit for a Retired First Sergeant
My current job as a Wounded Warrior Advocate for the US Army came as a result of networking. A good friend told me about a new program the Air Force was standing up called the Recovery Care Program. I applied for the US Air Force Academy Recovery Care Coordinator (RCC) position. After a couple of interviews I did not get the position and figured I would be staying in the recruiting job. However, a couple of months later the recruiter from the contract company with the RCC contract called me and told me she could get me to Fort Carson if I was interested in doing a similar job with the Army.
Without my knowledge, she had already submitted my resume to the Army. However, she related that it was turned back due to lack of Army experience. Being tenacious the recruiter asked me if I had ever done anything with the Army. I told her I had been stationed at Fort McClellan, Alabama back in the mid-90s. She asked me to accentuate that experience on my resume and she would resubmit it through proper channels. I made the adjustments to the resume and after another interview was hired into an Army Wounded Warrior Advocate position. In fact, the job is such a great fit for a retired Air Force First Sergeant that we have managed to get two other retired AF First Sergeants into positions on Fort Carson. It's ironic to have three retired AF senior non-commissioned officers working an Army program. However, the job is a perfect fit and closely resembles the role of an AF First Sergeant.
Summary of Lessons Learned
Transitioning from the military can be tough. It takes effort while looking for a job. I was naïve to rely upon one version of a resume. It was important that I took advantage of networking opportunities as well as using internet job boards to find job opportunities. Finding a job was a job and persistence paid off. Had I known then what I know now, my search may not have been near as tough.

In Honor Of All Women Who Served.

VA to Increase Mental Health Care Access through 200,000 Telemental Health Consultations in 2012 June 20, 2012

WASHINGTON (June 20, 2012)– In a continuing effort to increase Veterans’ access to mental health care, the Department of Veterans Affairs has set a goal to conduct more than 200,000 clinic-based, telemental health consultations for all mental health specialties in fiscal year 2012.  This follows VA’s announcement last month that it would no longer charge Veterans a copayment when they receive care in their homes from VA health professionals using video conferencing.
“Telemental health provides Veterans quicker and more efficient access to the types of care they seek,” said Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric K. Shinseki. “We are leveraging technology to reduce the distance they have to travel, increase the flexibility of the system they use, and improve their overall quality of life.  We are expanding the reach of our mental health services beyond our major medical centers and treating Veterans closer to their homes.”
The clinic-based telehealth program involves the more than 800 VA community-based outpatient clinics (CBOCs) where many Veterans receive primary care.  If the CBOCs do not have a mental health care provider available, secure video teleconferencing technology is used to connect the Veteran to a provider within VA’s nationwide system of care.
As a result, Veterans can arrange appointments at times more in synch with their schedules.  The program improves access to general and specialty services in geographically remote areas where it can be difficult to recruit mental health professionals.
“As technology is improving people’s lives in many areas, telemental health is making access to health care and support easier for Veterans with mental health conditions,” said Dr. Robert A. Petzel, Under Secretary for Health.  “For example, one combat Veteran from Iraq cites telemental health as a critical factor in rebuilding her life and coping with the aftermath of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and military sexual trauma.  Telemental health offered her a safe and convenient setting to receive gender sensitive services that helped her fit back into civilian life after three months of therapy.”
Since the start of the Telemental Health Program, VA has completed over 550,000 patient encounters.  In Fiscal Year 2011 alone, more than 140,000 encounters were conducted with 55,000 Veterans via CBOCs, where providers at 150 hospitals delivered care to veterans at more than 500 clinics.
The Telehealth Expansion Initiative launched in May 2011 called for an additional 21 regional leads, 144 facility coordinators and 1,150 clinical technicians to VA’s workforce.  When fully implemented, the expansion will provide a potential capacity of 1.2 million consultations annually.
Video to the home is currently projected to grow to 2,000 patients by the end of fiscal year 2012, with 1,500 using innovative new Internet Protocol (IP) video connected to Veterans’ personal computers.
In addition to supporting these current programs, the VHA National Telemental Health Center in West Haven, Conn., has pioneered additional new programs that delivered 1,000 specialized patient encounters from mental health experts at multiple VA sites to Veterans throughout the nation.  These include over 100 compensation and pension exams, 700 clinical encounters to over 165 Veterans enrolled in behavioral pain treatment programs, and 200 clinical-video and telephone encounters to over 70 Veterans enrolled in a bipolar disorder treatment program.
This campaign is part of VA’s overall mental health program.  Last year, VA provided quality, specialty mental health services to 1.3 million Veterans.  Since 2009, VA has increased the mental health care budget by 39 percent.  Since 2007, VA has seen a 35 percent increase in the number of Veterans receiving mental health services, and a 41 percent increase in mental health staff.
In April, as part of an ongoing review of mental health operations, Secretary Shinseki announced VA would add approximately 1,600 mental health clinicians as well as nearly 300 support staff to its existing workforce of 20,590 to help meet the increased demand for mental health services.  The additional staff would include nurses, psychiatrists, psychologists, and social workers.
For more information, on VA’s telemental health, visit the Office of Telehealth Services at http://www.telehealth.va.gov/

TRAINING REQUEST

State calling on employers to hire veterans as part of training program

Georgia Commissioner of Veterans Affairs Pete Wheeler is encouraging employers in the state to hire veterans as part of an “experience-based” On-The Job (OTJ) Training and Apprenticeship (APP) program that was established under the GI Bill that pays eligible, newly-hired veterans up to $13,212 in tax-free supplemental income over two years.

Commissioner Wheeler says that National Guardsmen and reservists are also eligible to apply for the program if they are “under a six-year contract” or qualify for the Reserve Educational Assistance Program or the Post-9/11 GI Bill (i.e., have been called to active duty for at least 90 consecutive days since September 11, 2001). He adds that spouses and dependents of veterans with a 100 percent VA disability rating can also apply.

Commissioner Wheeler explains that the payments are made directly to the veteran or applicable family member as a “salary supplement.” He says the beneficiary must work 30 hours or more per week while being supervised in an entry-level job to qualify for the payment, stressing that employers must complete a simple application as a first step (click on the link below for details).

The Georgia Department of Veterans Service’s State Approving Agency is responsible for approving OJT/APP program applications. Go to www.sdvs.georgia.gov or contact Larry  Edwards at 404.656.2306 or saaga@vs.state.ga.us for an application or additional information.
