Vietnam Veterans Homecoming Celebration: Mar. 31 at the Charlotte Motor Speedway (NC)

More than 216,000 North Carolina residents served in Vietnam, and some 1,600 made the ultimate sacrifice in that war. Now, the USO of North Carolina and Charlotte Motor Speedway, with support from the North Carolina Association of Broadcasters, will honor their service with an incredible Vietnam Veterans Homecoming Celebration on March 31 for the military members and their friends and families.

Vietnam veterans never received the type of homecoming celebration that today's troops receive as they return from service. To honor those who served and the military members who returned from combat, the USO of North Carolina is holding a long, overdue homecoming celebration. Hosted by the USO of North Carolina and Charlotte Motor Speedway, the Vietnam Veterans Homecoming Celebration 2012 is set to be an unforgettable experience featuring live entertainment, displays and demonstrations, military salutes, and much more!

Veteran Service Organizations will be on-site to assist veterans. Please bring your DD Form 214 so they can help, if needed.

Navy to Host Spouse, Veteran Hiring Fair Feb 25 in Bethesda, MD

The Navy and more than 25 large employers are teaming up to host the first-ever “100,000 Jobs Mission Hiring Event” at Naval Support Activity Bethesda, Md., on Feb. 25 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
This “Joining Forces” event is open to veterans, transitioning service members and military spouses. First Lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden, wife of Vice President Joe Biden, launched Joining Forces to rally the nation’s support for troops, veterans and their families.

“America is clearly hiring once again and efforts like this from our nation’s employers are exactly what’s needed to put our talented veterans and their spouses to work,” Brad Cooper, executive director of Joining Forces, said in an activity news release. “Teaming with the Navy at an event in Bethesda that brings job opportunities to veterans, spouses and wounded warriors is a win for everybody.”
This event, the release explained, differs from traditional job fairs by aligning registered candidates to specific companies and positions based on their interests and qualifications before the hiring event begins. Hiring managers will be on site to conduct interviews and may offer jobs that day.
More than 25 employers from diverse industries will be at the event, seeking to hire veterans and military spouses for jobs ranging from entry level to management positions. Other organizations also will be on hand to offer information about free programs veterans can use to help with their transition.
People are encouraged to register early for this event by visiting http://www.100000jobsmission.com. Job-seekers wishing to attend must have a current military ID card or proof of military service and a photo ID to access the base.
“We are looking forward to holding this hiring event,” said Nate Herman, executive director of military and veterans affairs for JPMorgan Chase, a founding member of the “100,000 Jobs Mission.” “Veterans bring much-needed skill and talent to the workplace. They are disciplined, hard-working and excellent team players. Every member of our coalition recognizes that and understands how valuable they are to our businesses.”
Through Joining Forces, the first lady and Biden have been leading White House efforts to reduce veteran and military spouse unemployment with America’s private sector in response to a presidential challenge to hire or train 100,000 veterans and military spouses by the end of 2013. Due to their efforts, more than 1,500 companies from around the country have committed to hiring 145,000 veterans in the next two years.
In the same spirit, 10 employers launched the 100,000 Jobs Mission in March with a goal of hiring 100,000 transitioning service members and military veterans by 2020. The coalition since has grown to 29 member companies who collectively hired more than 6,600 veterans under this program last year.
Working in conjunction with the Naval District Washington’s Fleet and Family Support Program, this hiring event connects the two endeavors in a more powerful and efficient effort that has one goal: to hire the nation’s veterans and military spouses.

Army Corps of Engineers offers internships for warriors in transition

AVANNAH, Ga. (Jan. 25, 2012) -- Soldiers in Warrior Transition Units at Fort Stewart, Ga., Fort Benning, Ga., Fort Gordon, Ga., and Fort Bragg, N.C., now have the option to learn valuable construction and engineering skills through internships with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Savannah District.

The internships are offered as part of Operation Warfighter, a temporary assignment internship program developed by the Department of Defense for service members that are recovering at military treatment facilities throughout the U.S. The program provides wounded, ill or injured service members with meaningful activity outside of the hospital environment and offers a supportive means of transition back to the military or civilian workforce.

"Through Operation Warfighter, the Corps of Engineers can give recovering Soldiers an opportunity to build their resumes, explore employment interests, develop job skills, and gain valuable federal government work experience that will help them prepare for their futures," said Doug Saxon, deputy chief of the Corps' Savannah District construction division.

Saxon and his team initiated the partnership in 2011 with Warrior Transition Units, or WTUs, at Army installations where the Savannah District has construction field offices. Overall, the Savannah District contracts and manages millions of dollars in military construction and provides real estate and environmental services at 11 Army and Air Force installations in Georgia and North Carolina. Of those installations, WTU units are located at Fort Stewart, Ga., Fort Benning, Ga., Fort Gordon, Ga., and Fort Bragg, N.C.

"Operation Warfighter allows the Corps and other participating federal agencies to benefit from each Soldier's considerable talents, skill sets and dedication," Saxon said.

Soldiers also benefit from the paid internships by accomplishing goals within their Comprehensive Training Plan and by learning valuable construction-management skills that can translate into jobs in both the private and federal sectors.

Examples of Corps construction projects include barracks; tactical equipment maintenance facilities; training ranges; brigade, battalion and command headquarters; hospitals and clinics; child development centers; fire stations; and roads and infrastructure.

The Corps' Savannah District is seeking WTU interns to serve a variety of roles at construction field offices. Interns will learn many facets of the career field, such as: safety; quality assurance; civil, mechanical and electrical engineering; schedule monitoring; contract payments and modifications; contract interpretation and enforcement; and public relations. Each intern is assigned a dedicated Corps mentor to coach and guide progress toward the internship goals.

Military members interested in obtaining an internship with the Corps of Engineers Savannah District should contact their local WTU unit coordinator.

For additional information about the Savannah District's construction program, call 912-652-5241, email CESAS-CD@usace.army.mil or visit www.sas.usace.army.mil
