US Solider is killed in Afghanistan 2 days before Christmas

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — An American service member was killed in combat Monday in Afghanistan, the U.S. military said, without providing further details, while the Taliban claimed they were behind a roadside bombing in northern Kunduz province that killed the U.S. soldier.

The latest fatality brings the number of U.S. deaths in Afghanistan this year to 20. There have also been three non-combat deaths in 2019. More than 2,400 Americans have died in the nearly 18-year conflict.

The Taliban now control or hold sway over practically half of Afghanistan but continue to stage near-daily attacks targeting Afghan and U.S. forces, as well as government officials — even as they hold peace talks with a U.S. envoy tasked with negotiating an end to what has become America’s longest war. Scores of Afghan civilians are also killed in the crossfire or by roadside bombs planted by militants.

Caliburn International Helps Worldwide Community Avoid Deadly Explosive Hazards Through Training – October 25, 2019

U.S. Ambassador Cherith Norman Chalet (right) presents a copy of one of 12 U.S.-developed training manuals to UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix (left) (U.S. Department of State photo).
RESTON, Va.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Caliburn International, a professional services company serving national defense, international diplomacy, and homeland security clients, has developed new United Nations (UN) training materials focused on eliminating improvised explosive device (IED) threats that are impeding global peacekeeping operations.
In recent years, international peacekeeping missions have become more complex and dangerous. From 2015-2018, a total of 154 UN peacekeepers were killed in malicious attacks in operations. In a growing number of incidents, IEDs were the weapon of choice.
Funded through the U.S. Global Peace Operations Initiative (GPOI) in partnership with the U.S. Department of State and the UN Mine Action Service (UNMAS), Caliburn has created 11 training manuals focused on improvised explosive device disposal (IEDD) and conventional munitions disposal (CMD) training. The training integrates classroom instruction and practical exercises utilizing current industry best practices.
“The goal of the project was to create a complete, standardized training curriculum that would enable UN and international organizations to teach CMD, IEDD, hazard awareness, and IED threat mitigation skills using a common internationally recognized lexicon and an agreed upon set of standards,” said Mike Pate, Senior Vice President and Head of Caliburn’s Munitions and Environmental Remediation line of business.
“We are proud to serve as an integral part in this global effort to generate improved capacity to defeat these deadly explosive hazards and further improve the interoperability of UN peacekeeping forces,” said C.D. Moore, Caliburn’s Chief Operating Officer and Executive Vice President.
UNMAS and capacity-building partners such as the U.S. have increased support for counter-IED and related training for troop and police contributing countries. However, the differences in training standards across the UN and other training providers have hampered the effectiveness of such efforts, until now.
UNMAS rolled out the new course materials at an international workshop, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Defense’s Africa Command, in Nairobi.

Caliburn International Renovates Al-Sqor Primary School in Iraq – October 21, 2019

Caliburn Chief Operating Officer, C.D. Moore, attends a Grand Opening Ceremony for the newly renovated Al-Sqor Primary School in Bakar Village on September 29, 2019.
Reston, Va. – (BUSINESS WIRE) – Caliburn International, LLC (Caliburn) recently completed a renovation of the Al-Sqor Primary School in Bakar Village. Located a short distance from Balad Air Base in Iraq, the village has endured years of conflict and unrest from the Iraq War through the insurgence, contributing to the school’s state of disrepair.
Caliburn identified specific needs to address in the renovation, focusing on shielding students from inclement weather, providing access to functional restrooms/washrooms, and enhancing classroom resources for the 600 boys and girls who attend the school each year.
“This was a wonderful opportunity to give back to the local community, which has always been supportive of Caliburn’s work in Iraq. Many of our Iraqi employees have children who attend the Al-Sqor Primary School, and we wanted them to have access to a clean, safe, and comfortable environment,” said Caliburn’s Chief Operating Officer, C.D. Moore.
Completed in three weeks, the renovation included cleaning and sanitizing all interior surfaces, repairing the roof, replacing classroom ceiling fans, replacing broken windows, replacing plumbing fixtures and restoring the bathrooms to working order, cleaning the school grounds and removing all debris, repairing classroom floors, and providing new desks and seats for the students.
Renovations were completed in advance of the start of the school year on September 25, 2019. Moore attended a Grand Opening Ceremony at the school on September 29, along with the Balad Base Commander and community leaders. At the ceremony, Caliburn distributed school supplies and dental care kits to the incoming students.

Janus Global Operations team clears vital Iraqi road of IEDs – October 4 2018

The Janus Global Operations team operating in Iraq on behalf of the U.S. Department of State’s Office of Weapons Removal and Abatement continues to assist Iraqi forces in making Iraq safe for its citizens. Demining experts from Janus Global, an integrated stability operations company, recently disarmed large improvised explosive devices (IED) embedded in and near a main Iraqi roadway near Baghdad.

The explosive devices, hidden in six sites, totaled nearly 400 pounds of explosives. They were found within a 100-meter stretch of a main supply road between Amariyah and Fallujah, about 20 miles west of Baghdad, Iraq’s capital city. The IEDs, neutralized by Janus Global, included five artillery shells ranging in size from 105 millimeters to 155-millimeters; one directional fragmentation charge, and an IED composed of three charges placed in 5-gallon fuel cans. Insurgents wired the devices so that they could be detonated from a distance.

Iraq’s Security Forces (ISF), while conducting a security sweep, discovered what appeared to be IEDs embedded (buried) in a main road and placed in a nearby culvert. The insurgents placed aiming markers on the roadsides to know at what point detonations would do the most damage to vehicles and the people in them.

Before commencing operations, Janus Global first used an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) to survey the site. Aerial reconnaissance revealed four IED positions. Two more were discovered during further exploration. When work began, Iraqi Forces established a perimeter around the worksite for area security, and Janus Global personal security staff kept watch over two explosive ordnance removal teams working from opposite ends of the road for close protection.

The IEDs were connected by command wires to a firing point in a house about 250 meters from the road. Using advanced mine detection and clearance equipment and procedures, the teams isolated the IEDs and cut them off from the possibility of remote detonation.

The teams had to literally dig the buried IEDs out of the road, which is quite dangerous.  After ensuring the IEDs were no longer a threat, Janus Global repaired the road, which is a vital link between the Amariyah and Fallujah communities.

Caregiver Support Program expansion

October 2019 “Caregivers play a critical role in the health and well-being of some of our most vulnerable Veterans. Under the MISSION Act, we are strengthening and expanding our program to positively impact the lives of Veterans and deliver the best customer experience to them and their caregivers.” – Secretary of Veterans Affairs Robert Wilkie. What is changing in the Caregiver Support Program (CSP)? Under the MISSION Act, Veterans Affairs (VA) is working to give more family caregivers access to the Program of Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers (PCAFC), so we can support them as they care for Veterans of all eras. Currently, the PCAFC is only available to eligible Veterans injured in the line of duty on or after September 11, 2001. Prior to expanding eligibility for the PCAFC, VA must upgrade its information technology (IT) system and implement other improvements to strengthen the program. When will the program expand? VA is not currently accepting applications for PCAFC from Veterans of other eras. The first phase of program expansion will occur once the Secretary has certified that VA’s new caregiver IT system is fully implemented and final regulations have been published, which could be as early as the Summer of 2020. VA will expand eligibility and begin accepting applications in 2 phases: • In the first phase, VA will begin accepting applications of eligible Veterans who incurred or aggravated a serious injury in the line of duty on or before May 7, 1975. • The final phase, due to begin two years after the first phase, will include eligible Veterans who incurred or aggravated a serious injury in the line of duty between May 8, 1975 and September 10, 2001. What does VA offer under PCAFC? In addition to services offered under the Program of General Caregiver Support Services (PGCSS), caregivers in the PCAFC may also receive a monthly stipend, beneficiary travel, mental health counseling, enhanced respite services, health insurance, if applicable, and other benefits. How is VA strengthening its caregiver program? In recent months, VA has developed or amended 14 standard operating procedures to clarify program requirements for VA staff, increased oversight in each Veterans Integrated Service Network, provided enhanced training and education to staff and caregivers, and boosted operational capacity with the ongoing hiring of hundreds of new staff across the country. What services does VA offer for all caregivers? Caregivers are eligible for a host of VA services including services offered under the PGCSS. These services are available to eligible Veterans of any era. PGCSS includes training, education, respite care, a telephone support line, peer-support mentoring, self-care courses and other services. These Caregiver Support Program MISSION Act Frequently Asked Questions services are available to support all caregivers, where the Veteran is enrolled for care in Veterans Health Administration, regardless of illness or injury. What else is VA doing for caregivers? VA is working across the organization to ensure caregivers have a positive experience through program improvements and initiatives to include: • Establishing a campaign (VA/Elizabeth Dole Foundation collaboration) that aims to integrate caregivers into the health care team through education modules about topics such as, therole and impact of caregivers. • Expanding telehealth services to enable Veterans and their caregivers to get care in the comfort of their homes. • Providing a toolkit for caregivers and family members to support their role in the prevention of suicide. • Annie Caregiver Text Support providing stress management tips via text messaging to caregivers. • Increasing self-care courses for caregivers. • Providing home and community-based care alternatives through the Choose Home Initiative at 21 VA medical centers. How can I learn more? For detailed information on the CSP and the full range of services available to caregivers, visit: https://www.caregiver.va.gov/ . For information on the MISSION Act, visit: https://missionact.va.gov/.

5 Highly Valued Skills Veterans bring to VA Careers

Skilled learned in the military are readily applied in careers at VA.

Veterans Month is a great time for newly transitioning service members or longtime Veterans to be reminded that VA hires former service members not only because it’s the right idea but because it’s the smart idea. Here are five skills to highlight when applying for healthcare careers at VA.

1.Teamwork.

Great leaders know how to step back and be team players. Remind an interviewer or recruiter that Veterans understand the level of communication, trust and responsibility needed to work effectively as a team. Veterans bring a sense of camaraderie to VA careers and the mission to serve and care for fellow Veterans.

2. Innovation.

The U.S. military develops some of the most sophisticated technologies in the world. Veterans may be the first to adopt many of these innovations, well before they make it to the civilian market. Let interviewers know that Veterans bring a high degree of technical skill and education to increasingly complex systems, a valuable asset when navigating cutting-edge healthcare technologies, building information systems that deliver benefits to Veterans and creating novel solutions to address challenges in the largest healthcare system in the country.

3. Resilience.

Military members operate under some of the most stressful conditions imaginable. The military trains people to handle and cope with stress, a skill that translates to VA’s busy healthcare environment. VA’s crew of former basic medical technicians, combat medic specialists, basic hospital corpsmen or basic health services technicians use skills learned in service to care for fellow Veterans as Intermediate Care Technicians, for instance. Former military personnel are ideal colleagues for busy days when things don’t go as planned.

4. Problem solving.

Work in the military is often dynamic and unpredictable. Highlight for job interviewers the military-tested ability to think quickly in changing circumstances, create solutions to surmount obstacles and safely complete the mission.

5. Diversity

During service, military members formed working relationships and friendships with fellow U.S. service members from many different backgrounds. In fact, the Veteran population is even more diverse than the U.S. population as a whole. Veterans should highlight ability to speak another language or anything that helps connect with Veteran patients in a special way that might set them apart from other candidates.

Apply your military skills after your service commitment; Choose VA Careers.
