Riding My Way Back chronicles
one soldier’s journey back from the brink of suicide. In 2010, Staff
Sergeant Aaron Heliker returned from multiple deployments to Iraq and
Afghanistan with a traumatic brain injury and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. At
his most desperate and isolated, on 42 medications and suicidal, Aaron is
introduced to the unlikeliest of saviors: a horse named Fred.
Through caring for Fred, Aaron begins the difficult process of reconnecting to
the world around him and healing the invisible wounds of war that nearly
defeated him.
Ride On offers un-mounted
Equine Facilitated Growth and Learning classes as well as more traditional
horseback riding lessons for Veterans and Military Service Families.
Ride On’s program is
designed to help veterans and their families cope with the psychological and
physical effects including post-traumatic stress and traumatic brain injury among
other issues. Our program involves a licensed psychotherapist and specially
trained horse staff.
Thanks to a grant
from the County of Ventura and the generous support of several private donors,
Ride On is able to provide up to 10 free mounted or un-mounted sessions for
Veterans allowing them to experience and benefit from this powerful and
effective therapy. Ride On staff will be
available after the screening to provide more information and answer questions.
