National Guard and Reserve Early Retirement Age. (Thanks Charlie!)

National Guard and Reserve Early Retirement Age

This is another topic that generates a lot of questions from Guard and Reserve retirees who are nearing the age they can begin drawing their military retirement pay.

The normal Reserve retirement age is 60. However, members of the Reserve Component who served at least 90 days during a fiscal year on a qualifying active-duty mobilization after Jan. 28, 2008 are authorized to begin drawing retirement pay three months early for each 90 day period they served in any given fiscal year.

Service on or before this date does not count toward early retirement. (No word if legislation will be passed to make this retroactive to September 11, 2001).

Early retirement only applies to drawing retirement pay, and does not apply to receiving retiree health care or certain other benefits.

Here is more information about early retirement from the Guard or Reserves:

The things she carries: The story of Para swimmer and U.S. Army Sgt. Elizabeth Marks

The things she carries: The story of Para swimmer and U.S. Army Sgt. Elizabeth Marks

I. Scars

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- U.S. Army Sgt. Elizabeth Marks ponders a question from the barista: What kind of coffee would she like? Mild, medium, dark roasts -- the bronze, silver and gold of coffee. She smiles and offers a ready answer: "Whatever kind has the most caffeine." Fresh from a grueling morning swimming practice and weightlifting session, Marks needs the energy. She grabs her cup, walks upstairs and snags a seat by the window. A few miles to her left, Pikes Peak climbs 14,114 feet into the crisp blue sky.

Marks, 25, has stolen away from the Olympic Training Center to savor this steaming cup of black coffee at a hipster cafe before going to "therapy," or what she calls it when she gets work done on a tattoo that covers much of her right leg, which was severely injured when she deployed to Iraq as a combat medic. Her left leg sits in an IDEO (intrepid dynamic exoskeletal orthosis), a prosthetic device that makes it possible for her to walk. She doesn't go anywhere without it.

The tattoo tells her life story. She puts her cup on the table and leans down to her right to examine it. She rubs her hand along it, pointing out the highlights, like an author flipping through her memoir.

Do Former Soldiers Make Better CEOs?

Do Former Soldiers Make Better CEOs?
Based on the research of Efraim Benmelech and Carola Frydman Chief executives with military experience perform better under pressure and are much less likely to commit corporate fraud.

Do Former Soldiers Make Better CEOs?
While studying the factors affecting corporate governance, Carola Frydman discovered an intriguing trend: corporate CEOs with military experience are steadily vanishing from the industry landscape. Among large, publicly held firms, the proportion of CEOs with military service in their background has decreased by an order of magnitude since 1980 — from 59% to only 6.2%.
Frydman, a visiting associate professor of finance at the Kellogg School (on leave from Boston University), along with Efraim Benmelech, an associate professor of finance at the Kellogg School, were already researching individual leadership personalities. The two decided to investigate the impact that CEOs with military backgrounds might have on the behavior of the firms they lead.
“For economists, it’s not necessarily an obvious view that individual characteristics matter in a corporate leader,” Frydman says. “For quite some time, economists thought it was it was all about the firm as a whole — that the most effective CEO was simply any person who would maximize value by implementing the firm’s policies. But now we are more interested in trying to separate out how much of these outcomes are due to the firm and how much can be attributed to individual leadership.

VA Disability Claim

My dear Actives and Vets,

I wrote VA Disability Claim out of anger and frustration at the VA . . . and love and admiration for all US military personnel and veterans. I’ve known the US military all my life, having been born into an Air Force family, then later served as a US Army Airborne Ranger in my mid-30s. And after I received my honorable discharge, I got to know the VA system inside and out, studying it with the mind and wisdom of a seasoned vet and curious observer.

It’s a shame we must tolerate such mediocrity in an institution that advertises itself as benevolent to veterans and their families. The VA has a long history of being consistently bad at patient care, so much so that more than half of all veterans opt out of the VA healthcare system altogether. What does this tell you? Shouldn’t those vets take advantage of all this free healthcare, including pharmacy prescriptions, eye and dental exams, yearly check-ups? Evidently not. Most vets I’ve spoken with say the VA isn’t broken, it is a wasteland and, hence, not worth even thinking about. So they seek outside medical care.

But what about the rest of us who cannot afford to go elsewhere?

We vets must learn this system and how to play the VA’s rigged game, and take advantage of necessary programs available to us. Veterans are obligated to do what it takes not only to learn about the benefits and healthcare system that is supposed to provide for us and our families, but make the system work for all of us.

VA Disability Claim details the necessary steps to prepare all the paperwork for a claim, file various types of VA disability claims, what pitfalls to avoid and how, and also how to commence and maintain an appeal. It was structured as a military field manual, something we’re all familiar with, and written in accessible and easy-to-understand language.

My hope is that every active-duty service member and veteran will read this book and learn how to protect her/him at each point in the claims and appeals process.

After all, we trained and fought as a team. Let us now continue as one. . . .

Cheers, Dean . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
