Veterans Pre Need Burial Eligibility Determination

VA National Cemeteries Now Offering Pre-Need Eligibility Determinations

WASHINGTONThe Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) today announced it now provides eligibility determinations for interment in a VA national cemetery prior to the time of need. Through the Pre-Need Determination of Eligibility Program, upon request, individuals can learn if they are eligible for burial or memorialization in a VA national cemetery.

“MyVA is about looking at VA from the Veterans’ perspective, and then doing everything we can to make the Veteran Experience effective and seamless,” said Secretary of Veterans Affairs Robert A. McDonald. “This new program reaffirms our commitment to providing a lifetime of benefits and services for Veterans and their families.”

Interested individuals may submit VA Form 40-10007, Application for Pre-Need Determination of Eligibility for Burial in a VA National Cemetery, and supporting documentation, such as a DD Form 214, if readily available, to the VA National Cemetery Scheduling Office by: toll-free fax at 1-855-840-8299; email to Eligibility.PreNeed@va.gov; or mail to the National Cemetery Scheduling Office, P.O. Box 510543, St. Louis, MO 63151.

VA will review applications and provide written notice of its determination of eligibility. VA will save determinations and supporting documentation in an electronic information system to expedite burial arrangements at the time of need. Because laws and personal circumstances change, upon receipt of a burial request, VA will validate all pre-need determinations in accordance with the laws in effect at that time.

            VA operates 135 national cemeteries and 33 soldiers’ lots in 40 states and Puerto Rico. More than 4 million Americans, including Veterans of every war and conflict, are buried in VA’s national cemeteries. VA also provides funding to establish, expand and maintain 105 Veterans cemeteries in 47 states and territories including tribal trust lands, Guam, and Saipan. For Veterans buried in private or other cemeteries, VA provides headstones, markers or medallions to commemorate their service. In 2016, VA honored more than 345,000 Veterans and their loved ones with memorial benefits in national, state, tribal and private cemeteries.

Eligible individuals are entitled to burial in any open VA national cemetery, opening/closing of the grave, a grave liner, perpetual care of the gravesite, and a government-furnished headstone or marker or niche cover, all at no cost to the family. Veterans are also eligible for a burial flag and may be eligible for a Presidential Memorial Certificate.

Information on VA burial benefits is available from local VA national cemetery offices, from the Internet at www.cem.va.gov, or by calling VA regional offices toll-free at 800-827-1000.  To make burial arrangements at any open VA national cemetery at the time of need, call the National Cemetery Scheduling Office at 800-535-1117.

A new federal policy could help veterans with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and who are presently ineligible for benefits, get the medical care and benefits they need. The Department of Defense set down new guidelines to work with veterans who are trying to upgrade discharges to get medical help. This new set of guidelines is for veterans who have been diagnosed with PTSD or who do not realize they have PTSD.

Correctional Officers maintain the security of the facility and the inmates in accordance with the CCA Way. The Correctional Officer performs routine duties in accordance with established policies, regulations and procedures to maintain order and provide for the security, care and direct supervision of inmates/residents in housing units, at meals, during recreation, on work assignments and during all other phases of activity in a correctional facility. May employ weapons or force to maintain discipline and order. Must be able to work any post assignment on any shift.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS for Correctional Detention Officers:
The successful applicant should be able to perform ALL of the following functions at a pace and level of performance consistent with the actual job performance requirements. Any additional qualifications and/or essential job functions applicable for specific facility locations or post assignments will be contained in Appendix A.
* Read and comprehend, including comprehension and implementation of actions required to carry out, specific post orders written for any assigned post.
* Monitor the safety practices and the preparation and dissemination of safety and accident reports as required by policy; take appropriate action in cases of serious and unusual incidents and emergencies.
* Assign inmates/residents to, and supervise inmates/residents during, work/program activities.
* Use mathematical skills (add, subtract, multiply and divide using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals) to accurately perform such functions as periodic inmate/resident counts.
* Conduct visual and audio surveillance for extended periods of time, including the reliable repetitive identification of inmates/residents by visual means.
* Escort inmates/residents to and from different areas for questioning, programs/activities, medical treatment, work and meals; use handcuffs and other appropriate restraints when necessary or required.
* Break up fights; effectively restrain an inmate/resident, forcibly if necessary, using handcuffs and other restraints; subdue resisting inmates/residents using maneuvers and resort to the use of hands and legs and other approved devices in self-defense.
* Aid in preventing escapes; pursue fleeing inmates/residents, take part in searches for escaped inmates/residents and other duties which may involve quickly entering and exiting secured areas; effecting the movement of heavy objects from one place to another; accessing elevated surfaces; passing through openings; moving over obstacles and in confined areas and using force to gain entrance.
* Perform searches of people, objects capable of concealing contraband, buildings and outdoor areas which will involve detecting and identifying objects, moving throughout the facility building(s) and/or grounds for long periods of time and detaining people.
* Engage in functions in confined areas that include such things as serving food, working rotating shifts, extended patrol and physically checking the doors, windows and other areas to ensure they are secure.
* Issue clothing and linen to housing units and requisitioned supplies to staff and inmates/residents, as directed.
* Inspect unclothed inmates/residents visually; possible exposure to body fluids, wastes and possible encounter with deceased or contagious persons.
* Endure verbal and mental abuse when confronted with the hostile views and opinions of inmates/residents and others, e.g. visitors and family members, encountered in an antagonistic environment.
* Perform rescue functions at accidents, emergencies and disasters to include administering basic emergency medical aid and CPR, physically removing people away from dangerous situations, and securing and evacuating people from confined areas.
* Take appropriate action to prevent or diffuse potentially disruptive situations.
* Put on and operate a self-contained breathing apparatus in appropriate situations.
* Prepare legible and accurate log entries and other reports or documents.
* Communicate effectively and coherently with staff, visitors and inmates/residents by giving information and directions, mediating disputes and advising of rights and processes.
* Demonstrate communication skills, including providing reliable testimony, in court and other formal settings.
* Read and comprehend documents, including comprehension and implementation of actions required in such documents as medical instructions, commitment orders, summons and other legal writs.
* Gather information and evidence in criminal and administrative investigations by interviewing and obtaining the statements of victims, witnesses, suspects and confidential informants and exercise independent judgment by determining when probable cause exists to recommend disciplinary action.
* Endeavor to comply with the requirements of applicable regulations, laws, rules, procedures, policies, standards and/or contract.
* Establish and maintain effective working relations with others and handle difficult interpersonal contacts.
* Interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
* Operate a motor vehicle during both the day and night where driving conditions can include congested traffic and unsafe road conditions caused by factors such as fog, rain, ice and snow.
* Remain alert at all times and react quickly, efficiently and calmly in emergency and other high stress situations.
* Complete in-service and other training programs as required.

Requirements for Correctional Detention Officers:
* High school diploma, GED certification or equivalent.
* Once hired, must complete pre-service correctional officer training and, where applicable, be a non-commissioned security officer licensed by the state of employment.
* A valid driver’s license is required. Demonstrate ability to complete any required training.
* Must be available to work any hours, any shift.

Minimum age requirement for Correctional Detention Officers:
Must be at least 18 years of age.
