Cybersecurity Alert: Avoid COVID-19 Scams

Dear Veteran Community,
As coronavirus (COVID-19) cases have risen across the state there has also been a considerable surge in scams related to the pandemic. Malicious actors are using this crisis as an opportunity to steal money and personal information as well as install malware onto computers. The scams are being instigated through fake websites, phishing emails, and phone and text messages.
The New York State Office of Information Technology Services (ITS) recently issued a series of precautions that veterans and others can take to protect themselves.
ITS recommends to:
  • Use trusted sources, such as legitimate government websites, for up-to-date, fact-based information about COVID-19. Check for misspellings within a link - for example, an address that should end with .gov ending in .com or .org instead. (Note, the World Health Organization uses a .int domain.)
  • Exercise extreme caution when responding to individual pleas for financial assistance such as those posted on social media, crowdfunding websites, or in an email, even if it appears to originate from a trusted source.
  • Be cautious of emails or websites that claim to provide information, pictures and/or videos.
  • Do not open unsolicited emails or click on the links or attachments in those emails.
  • Never reveal personal or financial information in an email or to an untrusted website.
  • Hang up on robocalls. Do not press any numbers.
For more advice on protecting yourself from scams, visit https://coronavirus.health.ny.gov/stay-cyber-safe.

Few 10-year-olds have traveled all over the world, served their country, or even ever saved a life. Jannett is not like most 10-year-olds, though. Janett is a military working dog with the 8th Military Working Dog Detachment, 91st Military Police Battalion, who retired from service and was adopted by her former handler Michael Arnold Mar. 24, 2020 at Fort Drum, N.Y. The German shepherd served as a patrol explosive detection dog and deployed multiple times during her career.

While overseas, she detected multiple IEDs and weapon caches, saving countless lives and keeping Soldiers in the fight while working closely with her human companions.

Arnold said that Janett’s presence helped boost the morale Soldiers while the two were deployed to Afghanistan from 2013 - 2014 with the Combined Joint Special Operations Task Force.

“We were fighting, and we had had a pretty rough day,” said Arnold. “We got back to the fire base, and the mood was pretty somber. The thing that cheered everyone up was her. She would go around the room, and everyone would pet her and love on her. She made bad days better. The mood in the room would just get lighter when she was around.”

Military-Civilian Candidates

Civilian EMT looking for PRN work Miami, FL

Hello,

My coworker showed me the email about hiring civilians who can help in different healthcare roles. I am a licensed EMT-B with almost 3 years of experience as an ED tech. I currently work full time as a Medical Assistant at an outpatient orthopedic practice, but am looking for PRN shifts that I can help during this time. Ideally, I would work weekends, or if needed, a few hours in the evening during the week. As things progress, my hours continue to change, which would theoretically open up more days that I would be available to work at one of your facilities. I am BLS certified.

Please let me know if I would be someone you would consider hiring. I’m hoping to help however I can during this pandemic.

Thank you,
Lea K

The Ingenious Reason Medieval Castle Staircases Were Built Clockwise

December 3, 2019

According to Nerdist, medieval architects built staircases to wrap around in a clockwise direction in order to disadvantage any enemies who might climb them. Since most soldiers wielded swords in their right hands, this meant that their swings would be inhibited by the inner wall, and they’d have to round each curve before striking—fully exposing themselves in the process.
Just as the clockwise spiral hindered attackers, so, too, did it favor the castle’s defenders. As they descended, they could swing their swords in arcs that matched the curve of the outer wall, and use the inner wall as a partial shield. And, because the outer wall runs along the wider edge of the stairs, there was also more room for defenders to swing. So, if you’re planning on storming a medieval castle any time soon, you should try to recruit as many left-handed soldiers as possible. And if you’re defending one, it’s best to station your lefties on crossbow duty and leave the tower-defending to the righties.
