Career Fair Advice

If you’re going to invest time, effort and gas money in attending an event, you’ll want to get the most out of it. Here are some tips to help you stand out from the crowd.

Have a plan. Most events offer a list of the companies who will be attending. Take a look at each company’s online recruiting site to see what positions are open. If you’re a strong match for any of them, make those companies your first priority as you enter the venue. Knowing what they’re looking for allows you to make the most of the few minutes you’ll have with the company rep. Customize your resume to highlight the skills listed in the job postings, and think about smart questions you might ask the recruiter.

Arrive early. Crowds build as the event goes on, so being one of the first through the door means that you’ll have more time to speak with recruiters before things get hectic. If you have a plan of which companies you want to speak to first, head for them; most attendees will simply wander the aisles and take company booths in order. In contrast, arriving at the end of the event is almost always a bad idea; the company reps are tired and hoarse, and some may pack up early as the crowds thin out.

Dress for success. You’ll be meeting dozens of representatives from a wide variety of companies. Most of these representatives are directly involved in the decision making process when it comes to hiring new employees.  It is important to make a good first impression, so dress as you would for an interview. Don’t forget that you may be observed from any point in the room; make sure you look confident, professional and positive even when you’re not directly in front of a recruiter.
