SemperMax - FW: SBA Appoints Zacchea on Advisory Committee for Veterans Business Affairs

All-
One of our members, a wounded veteran, is being recognized! Congrats, Mike!
------------------------------
CONNECTICUT U.S. Small Business Administration Administrator Maria-Contreras Sweet recently appointed Michael Zacchea as a member of the Advisory Committee on Veteran’s Business Affairs (ACVBA). This appointment is effective for a three-year term beginning June 1, 2015.
Michael Zacchea is currently Director for the UConn Entrepreneur Bootcamp for Veterans with Disabilities. The ACVBA serves as an independent source of advice and policy recommendations to SBA’s Administrator, as well as Deputy Administrator, SBA’s Associate Administrator for Veteran’s Business Development, Congress, the President, and other U.S. policymakers on programs affecting veteran-owned small business. All members appointed serve in a representational capacity.

“With your valuable advice and support, SBA can continue to enhance the growth of veteran-owned small businesses and private enterprises,” said SBA Administrator Maria Contreras-Sweet. Connecticut’s District Director Bernard M. Sweeney says “Zacchea is the perfect person to represent the ACVBA for the state of Connecticut because he has demonstrated a strong commitment to serving those who have served,” added Sweeney.  Zacchea was named SBA’s Connecticut District Office Veteran Advocate Champion in 2012 during Small Business Week.

Mike Zacchea was commissioned in the Marine Corps in 1990. He served as a forward observer and platoon commander, deploying to Somalia for Operation Restore Hope and to Haiti for Operation Support Democracy. In March 2004, as a major, he deployed to Iraq for Operation Iraqi Freedom II. His team's mission was to build, train, and lead in combat the first Iraqi army battalion trained by the US military. During this time, the battalion participated in Operation Phantom Fury, the 2nd Battle of Fallujah. During the battle, Mike was wounded by a rocket-propelled grenade, but declined to be medically evacuated.

Mike's military awards include the Bronze Star Medal for Valor (with gold star in lieu of 2nd award), the Purple Heart Medal, a Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, a Combat Action Ribbon, and numerous unit and campaign awards. Mike was also the first and at the time only American recognized by the Iraqi government by the Order of the Lion of Babylon. As a result of his wounds, Mike was medically retired with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

He is currently the Program Director of the University of Connecticut Entrepreneur Bootcamp for Veterans with Disabilities, Mike has helped start 25 businesses get started since 2010. He is also involved in the creation of ConnectVets, Inc., a non-profit organization of veteran-owned businesses in the state of CT. He recently joined a multi-agency cross-disciplinary working group chaired by the Commissioner of the CT Department of Veterans Affairs to align veteran education, job-training, and workforce re-entry issues.

For more information about SBA programs, visit the SBA website at www.sba.gov/ct, or contact the local SBA Veterans Affairs Officer, Frank Alvarado at (203) 335-0427

Career Fair Advice

If you’re going to invest time, effort and gas money in attending an event, you’ll want to get the most out of it. Here are some tips to help you stand out from the crowd.

Have a plan. Most events offer a list of the companies who will be attending. Take a look at each company’s online recruiting site to see what positions are open. If you’re a strong match for any of them, make those companies your first priority as you enter the venue. Knowing what they’re looking for allows you to make the most of the few minutes you’ll have with the company rep. Customize your resume to highlight the skills listed in the job postings, and think about smart questions you might ask the recruiter.

Arrive early. Crowds build as the event goes on, so being one of the first through the door means that you’ll have more time to speak with recruiters before things get hectic. If you have a plan of which companies you want to speak to first, head for them; most attendees will simply wander the aisles and take company booths in order. In contrast, arriving at the end of the event is almost always a bad idea; the company reps are tired and hoarse, and some may pack up early as the crowds thin out.

Dress for success. You’ll be meeting dozens of representatives from a wide variety of companies. Most of these representatives are directly involved in the decision making process when it comes to hiring new employees.  It is important to make a good first impression, so dress as you would for an interview. Don’t forget that you may be observed from any point in the room; make sure you look confident, professional and positive even when you’re not directly in front of a recruiter.

What are the best cities for veterans to live?

USA Today

For years, maybe decades, members of the military have lived where the U.S. government has told them to live. So when that discharge paperwork comes through, how do they decide where to go? Among large cities, Virginia Beach, Virginia, ranked No. 1 for best places to live, with Colorado Springs, Colorado, and San Antonio, Texas, in second and third place, respectively.

Five Hot Jobs for Ex-Military Personnel #Exmilitaryjobs

Five Hot Jobs for Ex-Military Personnel #Exmilitaryjobs

The US military is arguably the best-trained workforce in the world, and personnel who leave military service have skills that translate to virtually any career. Here's a look at five popular jobs that give the men and women who've served our country an opportunity to make a difference and move up.

Information Technology Specialist
Former members of the military have worked with some of the most advanced technology in the world. They can use that hands-on experience in a civilian capacity as an IT professional.
According to the US Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics, "Computer scientists and database administrators are expected to be among the fastest growing occupations through 2014." In addition to enjoying a demand for your services, you can also exercise your entrepreneurial side as an IT specialist and become a certified contractor. Search for IT jobs.

Police Officer
Former military personnel hold a special place in the heart of police department recruiters across the U.S. The qualities of a great police officer are virtually identical to those of a great soldier: both have a desire to serve their country and community and protect people and their rights. A career in law-enforcement may appeal to those with military service due to its similarities with military structure and practices.
Because vets are in such high demand, many police departments offer hiring perks, including extra points on the entrance exam, an age deduction from the maximum age limit, GI Bill benefits, retirement perks and more

Math or Science TeacherFormer military personnel with technology backgrounds can make wonderful teachers, as they are familiar with maintaining order and instilling a sense of pride in others. And being a teacher has other rewards: generous vacation time (including summers off), opportunities to earn extra income through tutoring or by teaching additional classes, and coaching.

Entrepreneur
According to SCORE, a nonprofit partner with the US Small Business Administration that dispenses free business advice, almost one in four US veterans buys or launches a new business or is seriously considering it.
Many ex-military members thrive through discipline. It's also a quality that every business owner needs for her company to survive its first few years and become a viable operation.
From franchising to starting a company from scratch, there are many ways for military personnel to pursue entrepreneurship. Visit score.org and eauth.com to learn about additional opportunities and resources just for veterans.

Civilian Public Service
People who have served in the military may be drawn to continue their career in public service. In fact, certain veterans will receive hiring preference over civilians when applying for federal jobs. You can find out more by visiting the Office of Personnel Management.
"Not coincidentally, many people who leave the service head to Washington, DC," says John Challenger, of Challenger, Gray and Christmas, a global outplacement firm. "There's a large community of military personnel there as well as opportunity." In fact, 16 percent of federal jobs are based there. "There's a bond there that's similar to those of fraternities or sororities, and that bond can be very valuable in a job search," he adds.

The above list is just a start. People who have served in the military have a vast array of transferable skills that they can leverage to continue careers in their chosen fields

Did you know the ZIP code was invented by an Air Force veteran?

In the rise of today’s digital world where you can buy almost anything and have it delivered by the next day, it’s hard to believe there was a time when mail functioned without a ZIP code.
Here’s how ZIP code was invented and how it revolutionized the U.S. Post Office:

H. Bentley Hahn, the man who gave us ZIP codes

With the loss of many employees from World War II and mail circulation on the rise, the U.S. Post Office was searching for ways to manage the exponentially increasing mail volume.

After serving in the Air Force from 1942 to 1946, Henry Bentley Hahn, Sr., became a postal inspector for the U.S. Post Office Department. Six years later, Hahn developed a solution to the growing mail problems with the idea of a “Zone Improvement Plan,” establishing the ZIP Code and the two-letter state abbreviations.

The final plan was announced to the public on November 28, 1962 and implemented on July 1, 1963.
