Women are Veterans, Too! Expo - Oct. 14 (Lufkin, TX)

VA clinic getting ready to host ‘Women are Veterans, Too!’ Expo

By STEVE KNIGHT/The Lufkin News | Posted: Tuesday, September 20, 2011 2:00 pm

The Charles Wilson Veterans Affairs Outpatient Clinic is sponsoring a “Women are Veterans, Too!” Expo from 1-4 p.m. on Oct. 14 at 2206 N. John Redditt Drive in Lufkin.

The event is free and open to all women veterans living in East Texas.

Women veterans may bring their DD Form 214 Military Service Record to the event for immediate enrollment in the VA Health Care System.

Free information about VA health care entitlements will be available. Subject matter experts will be on hand to discuss topics including post-deployment, military sexual trauma, post-traumatic stress disorder, traumatic brain injury, and women veteran liaison assistance.

“We have a women veterans’ health group, and the focus of this is on women veterans. The women veterans are entitled to the same VA care as the male veterans,” said Beverly Roach, licensed clinical social worker with the Charles Wilson VA Outpatient Clinic. “Our focus is getting the news out there what they are eligible for. We’ll assist them in signing up for VA benefits. We’ll have information about the benefits that are available for them.”

The expo is a new initiative coordinated by the Charles Wilson VA Outpatient Clinic to bring women veterans from all eras together with information about the wide range of programs and services.

Bobbi Gruner, public information officer at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center in Houston, said with the increased number of females that served in the military, many are not aware of the benefits they are entitled to.

“Many of the returning veterans in the current conflicts are younger. Their concentration is on jobs and family and they’re thinking, ‘Well, the VA — maybe I’ll take care of that when I’m older,’ but we want to get them to enroll now. We want to make sure they understand their benefits,” Gruner said. “We’re trying to do more outreach to all returning veterans, and the female veterans are often overlooked. Many people don’t think of females as veterans. Until they come to us, we don’t know how many are out there.”

Females comprise 7.5 percent of the total veteran population, and more than 230,000 women veterans have served in the Middle East since 2001. More than 650 have been wounded and 120 have died, according to the Department of Defense.

For more information, contact Roach at 671-4349 or Marilyn Davis at 671-4310.

The First IAVA/U.S. Chamber of Commerce "Hiring Our Heroes Smart Job Fair" to happen Oct. 6 in San Francisco, CA

Time:
Thursday, October 6 · 12:00pm - 5:00pm

Location:

Green Room of the San Francisco War Memorial Veterans Building
401 Van Ness Avenue
San Francisco, California

Description:

Next month, Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA) is bringing our Combat to Career program to San Francisco, and we need your support to make it a huge success.

As you may have seen, TIME Magazine recently featured five IAVA member veterans on the cover, calling Iraq and Afghanistan veterans "The New Greatest Generation." (http://iava.org/faces-next-greatest-generation).
The piece highlighted the tremendous potential ...of this generation of veteran leaders; it also underscored the huge challenges our community faces, including a 9.8 percent unemployment rate.

To directly combat veteran unemployment in the Bay Area, IAVA will partner with the US Chamber of Commerce to host an innovative Hiring Our Heroes Smart Job Fair during San Francisco's 2011 Fleet Week on October 6th, 12pm - 5pm. The job fair will be held in the Green Room of the San Francisco War Memorial Veterans Building, 401 Van Ness Avenue, San Francisco, CA 94102. We want you and your fellow vets to participate.

Veterans attend free of charge, and IAVA and the Chamber are handling outreach, screening, preparation and services (like on-site resume workshops and interview training) for the vets. This fair will be innovative (like most IAVA events). We will host committed companies well-prepared to hire vets in October and long into the future. This is not another fluffy job fair -it's about getting vets hired- and getting companies their future stars from the veterans' community.

Please spread the word to your fellow vets, and to begin your registration process to attend, please go to http://iava.org/first-annual-fleet-week-smart-job-fair

Retroactive Traumatic Injury Benefits No Longer Just For OEF/OIF Injuries

Recent VA News Releases

TSGLI Payments Will Be Made for Qualifying Injuries

WASHINGTON (September 16, 2011) - The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is extending retroactive traumatic injury benefits to Servicemembers who suffered qualifying injuries during the period Oct.7, 2001 to Nov. 30, 2005, regardless of the geographic location where the injuries occurred.

"Now all of our nation's Servicemembers who suffered severe traumatic injuries while serving their country can receive the same traumatic injury benefits, regardless of where their injury occurred," said Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric K. Shinseki. "We at VA appreciate the efforts of Congress and the President to improve benefits for our troops."

Effective Oct. 1, the Servicemembers' Group Life Insurance (SGLI) Traumatic Injury Protection benefit, known as TSGLI, will be payable for all qualifying injuries incurred during this period. This retroactive benefit is payable whether or not the Servicemember had SGLI coverage at the time of the injury.

The Veterans' Benefits Improvement Act of 2010, passed by Congress and signed by President Obama in October of 2010, removes the requirement that injuries during this period be incurred in Operations Enduring or Iraqi Freedom (OEF/OIF).

This is welcome news for the many  Servicemembers who suffered serious traumatic injuries while serving stateside or in other areas outside of OEF/OIF during this time period, but until now have not been eligible for TSGLI. TSGLI provides a payment ranging from $25,000 to $100,000 to Servicemembers sustaining certain severe traumatic injuries resulting in a range of losses, including amputations; limb salvage; paralysis; burns; loss of sight, hearing or speech; facial reconstruction; 15-day continuous hospitalization; coma; and loss of activities of daily living due to traumatic brain injury or other traumatic injuries.

National Guard and Reserve members who were injured during the retroactive period and suffered a qualifying loss are also eligible for a TSGLI payment, even if the cause was not related to military service, such as a civilian automobile accident or severe injury which occurred while working around their home.

National Guard and Reserve members make up more than 40 percent of the total force which has been deployed since 9-11. Those who are no longer in the National Guard or Reserves can also apply as long as their injury occurred while they were in service. "I am extremely pleased that these total force warriors who defend our freedoms are getting the recognition and benefits they have rightfully earned in service to our nation," added Under Secretary for Benefits Allison A. Hickey.

VA is working with the Department of Defense to publicize this change in the TSGLI law. Additionally, all of the branches of service are identifying any claims previously denied because the injury was not incurred in OEF/OIF and reaching out to those individuals. Although applications are currently being accepted by branch of service TSGLI offices, benefits will not be paid until Oct. 1, 2011, the effective date of the law.

For more information or to apply for a TSGLI payment, Servicemembers and Veterans should go to
http://www.insurance.va.gov/sgliSite/TSGLI/TSGLI.htm
