Westchester County, NY – (May 11, 2017) – Fordham University has announced that registration is now open for the summer session of the Veterans Writing Workshop, which is available at the University’s Westchester campus in West Harrison.

The workshop, sponsored by the Fordham Veterans Initiative, is open to all United States veterans and active duty service members free of charge, and takes place over 10 consecutive weeks beginning onTuesday, June 6. All classes will take place from 6:30-8:30 pm, and will include writing, positive feedback and supportive fellowship. Classes will also be offered at Fordham’s Lincoln Center campus beginning Thursday, June 8.

Open to veterans of all writing levels and military experience, the Veterans Writing Workshop asks, “What’s your story?” Program participants meet for two hour sessions each week where they will be given the tools and confidence to bring their stories to life through writing exercises and feedback from instructors and classmates. The workshop culminates with the publication of Afterwords, an anthology comprised of works created in the class. Participating veterans will also celebrate their written works with public readings and events throughout the community.

The Veterans Writing Workshop was created in the spring of 2010 by instructor David Surface, who has 20 years of experience teaching writing to all age groups through schools, adult education programs, and social service organizations. The workshop at Fordham Westchester has produced an installment of the Afterwords anthology every year since 2013.

“We have found that one of the best, and easiest, ways to ensure that veterans feel appreciated, valued and understood is by helping them tell their stories – and making sure those stores are heard,” said Surface. “Fordham has been a wonderful partner because they share our mission of helping veteran’s tell their stories. We’re looking forward to another wonderful session this summer.”
