The Pennsylvania State Police is a full service agency. Duties include uniform patrol, crash investigation, criminal investigation, and response to incidents. PA State Troopers provide primary police coverage in over 1,200 municipalities on a permanent basis, accounting for over 60% of the Commonwealth’s municipalities. Troopers also patrol all interstate and state highways. Troopers patrol 85% of the Commonwealth’s land area and 66% of the Commonwealth’s highways.
In addition to providing patrol services and criminal investigation, the PSP provides a variety of support and technical services with over 100 different career fields. These services are provided not only to areas of primary PSP patrol coverage, but PSP also supports municipal law enforcement agencies through specially trained members and civilians, including Special Emergency Response Teams, Forensics Services Units, Tactical Mounted Units, Canine Units, Arson Investigation, Criminal Profilers, Major Case Teams, Fugitive Units, Organized Crime, Aviation Units, Motorcycle Patrol Units, and Hazardous Devices and Explosives Units, just to name a few.

The Pennsylvania State Police offers a tremendous pay and benefits package. There are regular contractual raises, and opportunities for promotion, advancement, and service in numerous specialty units.Pennsylvania State Police Trooper Salary and Benefit Information:
Graduation after July 1, 2015 – Starting Salary is $ 57,251
Graduation after July 1, 2016 – Starting Salary is $ 58,962 *Overtime pay and shift differential are paid as applicable.
Troopers are granted an annual clothing allowance of $600* for clothing maintenance.
Troopers earn 10* vacation days during their first year of employment and then 15 days of vacation beginning with their second year of employment.
Troopers earn 15* sick days per calendar year.
Troopers receive 12* paid holidays per calendar year.
Troopers receive 4* personal days per calendar year.
Upon graduation and promotion to the rank of Trooper, members and their dependents are eligible for Health Care Program, Dental Care Program, Vision Care Plan, Prescription Drug Program, and a Health Reimbursement Account. The Commonwealth pays the entire cost of all coverage for the Trooper and their eligible family members. *Subject to change with the effective dates of new labor contracts.
