The Commission was created under Title II
of the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972, which took effect on 21
December of that year. The Commission’s primary focus and duties are the
protection and conservation of marine mammals.

ADMINISTRATIVE SUPPORT ASSISTANT (GS-6)
Employment Opportunity at the Marine Mammal Commission (Commission).
This position is ONLY OPEN TO a DISABLED VETERAN
The Commission is a very small (staff of 12), independent government agency charged with oversight of implementation of the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA). Our staff is primarily scientists and policy experts who conduct reviews of various draft policy and regulatory documents from the relevant regulatory agencies, and provide comments and recommendations on these materials. The Commission’s recommendations must either be implemented by those federal agencies, or the agencies must explain in writing why the recommendations were not enacted.
The selected candidate will perform the following basic duties:
• eview the Federal Register daily (on-line) and prepare a list of actions for which the Commission may need to provide input (e.g. proposed rules, draft NEPA documents, applications for permits under MMPA, etc.).
• Maintain a spreadsheet that lists those action items, the due dates, and staffers responsible for completing the letters.
• Keeping the Commission website up to date with final copies of the latest letters submitted by Commission staff.
• Filing publications “electronically” to the Commission’s virtual library.
• Answering the main phone line and directing calls/taking messages.
•Responsibility for monitoring incoming email to the Commission website and preparing responses.
• All physical mailing – in and out, sorting, distribution.
• Preparing all correspondence in final format, including proof reading, printing on letterhead, ensuring proper signatures and sending the letter via Federal Register portal, email, and/or regular mail – and filing the letter.
The qualifications are as follows:
• Basic knowledge of software for word processing, spreadsheets, and general information search (Microsoft word, Excel, etc.)
• Excellent English and communication skills in writing and speaking.
• Ability to proof read a document for spelling, grammar, punctuation, and then format with letterhead.
• Familiarity with web-based searches.
