Job Description for EMT Paramedic Afghanistan
SCOPE:
The Paramedic is clinically supervised by the site lead or other physician extenders on the work site and ultimately reports to the ALiSS – Afghanistan Program Manager.
The Paramedic will be assigned to treat patients in a medical/trauma hospital and assists in examination and treatment of patients under the direction of a physician or physician extender.
Interviews patients, measures vital signs (i.e., pulse rate, temperature, blood pressure, weight, and height), and records the information on patients’ charts. Paramedic may be required to draw and collect blood samples from patients and prepare specimens for laboratory analysis.  In some settings the Paramedic may be assigned a leadership role as Lead Paramedic.
The Paramedic will perform emergency skills, such as managing respiratory, trauma, and cardiac emergencies, and patient assessment. Typically, a Paramedic will deal with bleeding, fractures, airway obstruction, cardiac arrest, and emergency childbirth. In addition to carrying out the procedures of the other levels, paramedics administer medications orally and intravenously, interpret electrocardiograms (EKGs), perform endotracheal intubations, and use monitors and other complex equipment.
All services shall be provided in accordance with established standards, principles and ethics of the profession, applicable professional specialty organizations, and the high-quality standard for which CHS is recognized.

Required Skills for EMT Paramedic Afghanistan
REQUIRED CERTIFICATION, QUALIFICATIONS, AND EXPERIENCE:
High School diploma, GED or equivalent education required.
Completed an approved Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Paramedic course, and certification as a Paramedic.
Received additional education and training in anatomy and physiology as well as advanced medical skills.
Associate degree from a community college or technical school sufficient to prepare for the NREMT examination is particularly desirable.
Have a minimum of 3 years’ experience
Clinical and EMS field experience preferred.
Experience as a Combat Medic or Navy Corpsman is desirable.
All Paramedics shall be listed and hold a current licensure with the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians as well as a current unrestricted U.S. State license, ACLS and BLS certifications. Applicants only holding a current unrestricted U.S. State License must also have current BLS, ACLS, PALS and PHTLS or ITLS.
Participate in training, (including HIPAA training)
All health care providers and medical support staff must have recent clinical experience in their field providing patient care for at least 6 months out of the past year.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES for EMT Paramedic Afghanistan:
The Contractor shall utilize additional care providers in all medical facilities to assist with patient administration; vital signs; post-operative, intravenous, and intramuscular medications; cardiopulmonary resuscitation and resuscitative trauma care; along with other duties as determined by the primary medical providers (physicians, nurse practitioners and Physician Assistants) that do not exceed the scope of practice.
Paramedics will use and maintain common emergency equipment, such as backboards, suction devices, splints, oxygen delivery systems, and stretchers.
Assists with the managing of day to day activities and prioritizing tasks.
Operates personal computer to access e-mail, electronic calendars, and other basic office support software.
Complies with all applicable CHS standards and guidelines.
All Health Care Providers (HCPs) will document care delivered and follow up care required.
Attends and participates in a variety of meetings and task force groups to improve quality and outcomes, communicate issues, obtain approvals, resolve problems and maintain specific level of knowledge pertaining to new developments, new task efforts, and new policy requirements.
Treats patients in accordance with medical standards of care for the appropriate Scope of Practice and abides by approved CHS EMS Protocols.
Maintains the highest regard for patient dignity and observe the precepts of the American Hospital Associations Bill of Rights for patients.
Other duties as assigned.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS for EMT Paramedic Afghanistan:
Must have a valid, current U.S. Driver’s License
Must have a current U.S. Passport.
Must sign a CHS Foreign Service Agreement (FSA) and is bound to the terms and conditions of the FSA.
Shall be proficient in the ability to speak, write and communicate in English.
Work hours are based on a 72 hr. work week; typically six 12 hour days but other variations may apply.
Requires a favorably adjudicated Moderate Risk Public Trust (MRPT) investigation conducted by the Department of State, Bureau of Diplomatic Security.
Shall Attend a Pre-deployment Counter Terrorism training course prior to deployment to Afghanistan for work on the ALiSS program
Shall demonstrate proficiency in the use of basic word processing programs and the CHS Medical Management System software.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS for EMT Paramedic Afghanistan:
Must be confirmed by a medical examination to be “medically and dentally fit” in accordance CHS Medical Readiness Guidelines and Policies and/or as dictated by the Client
No conditions that would prevent the wear of personal protective equipment; including protective mask, ballistic helmet, body armor and chemical/biological protective garments or conditions that would prevent the capability of donning, lifting or carrying of up to 70 lbs. of referenced gear while running to a bunker or protected area in the face of perceived or imminent danger.
Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment; travel in Afghanistan is required by surface or air.
The climate is desert-like, hot, and prone to dust storms.
