After his plane crash landed in the North Sea during the Second World War, Edward Field recalls, “I hung on to the side of the raft and I said , Guys, squeeze together, let me on! But they were scared, because they could have capsized the raft, then all of them would have drowned, and it was winter….”
Edward Field is a prominent writer in LGBT literature. He lived through a harrowing event during WWll and wrote a poem about it in 1965 that is now part of the Library of America. Now, more than 50 years later, the poem is being produced as an animated short film and Field is the narrator. Join SAGEVets as we screen this amazing work of art and welcome Edward Field who will lead a discussion after the viewing.

Bon Jovi Shares New Song 'Unbroken,' A Tribute Veterans and Service Dogs
Bon Jovi has released their new song "Unbroken," an emotional track that will also be featured in the forthcoming documentary To Be of Service. And the band, along with Island records, are donating proceeds from the song to an important organization.
Written by Jon Bon Jovi and produced by John Shanks, "Unbroken" is a touching song from a veteran's perspective about everything they experience while at war, and then when they come home and are struggling with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (commonly referred to as PTSD). The rocker sings lyrics like, "It's 18 months now I've been stateside/ With this medal on my chest/ But there are things I can't remember/ And there are things I won't forget."
For the next year, Bon Jovi and Island Records will donate 100% of net proceeds from "Unbroken" to the Patriotic Service Dog Foundation, a non-profit organization that, as their official website explains, matches veterans "with highly trained and skilled Service Dogs that allow their new partners to become more independent, self-confident, and comfortable with life outside of the military/law enforcement.".

It’s very important that you make the time to prepare for your upcoming interview. This preparation includes doing research about the company, thinking about the questions you’ll be asked (and how you’ll answer), and even asking a friend or family member to do a practice interview with you.
If you’re just starting your transition from military to civilian life, it may have been a while since you’ve had a job interview. Our goal is to help you get as prepared and confident as possible in advance, so that you can be your best self during the interview.

So, how about we take the pain out of cover letters for everyone – you, the military veteran who is seeking civilian employment and for the people who will read your cover letter.
Read on to learn about the top cover letter writing tips we want you to follow. It’s also important you highlight your military career in your cover letter, so we’ve included advice on how you can best do this.
What Is A Cover Letter?
A cover letter is your chance to do bridge the gaps between your resume and you, the person. While your resume includes the facts on your career goals, education, employment history, and volunteer experience – your cover letter is your chance to introduce yourself.
It’s in your cover letter that hiring managers look for the reasons why they should interview you and consider hiring you. You want to use your cover letter as a way to stand out from the pile of resumes that include similar skills and experience.
Just as we want you to write a unique resume for every job you apply for, you must do the same with your cover letter. When writing your cover letter, think about what you want to tell the hiring manager about yourself.
Imagine you have just a couple of minutes to introduce yourself and tell this person why you would be an ideal fit for the role and company. Remember to let your personality shine through and to be yourself.
How To Write A Great Resume
We want you to have a smooth transition from your military to civilian career. One of the first and vital steps in this career transition is in creating your resume.
And this is why we’re here – to give you the information you need to write a great resume and to support you as your veteran’s employment services expert. Because we communicate with corporate clients on a daily basis, we know what employers are looking for in candidate resumes.
We’ve put together our top resume writing tips that will help you convert your military experience, education, and skills to a civilian career.
Before we get into specifics, want to remind you of one key point about every single resume: you absolutely cannot have spelling or grammatical errors or have a disorganized and poorly formatted resume. It doesn’t matter how talented you are, if the hiring manager or human resources specialist struggles to read and understand your resume, it quickly goes to the bottom of the pile.
Follow our advice to create a great resume that stands out, gets you noticed, and hired.
Research The Civilian Job Requirements
It’s important that you do more than read the job description and title – you have to really understand what the employer is looking for. This means, reading between the lines and paying attention to mandatory skills and education, nice-to-have skills, and bonus criteria that can give you an edge.
- Pay attention to the language used in the job description. Is it very formal or more relaxed and friendly? This can tell you a lot about the company, the people you’ll be working with, and the type of person the company is looking for.
- Look for keywords and repeated emphasis on skills, education, etc. Does the job description use words like leadership, management, people person, responsive, time management, etc.? These are clue words that can tell you more about what the job is likely to entail.
- Is there an emphasis in the job description on education, experience, or both? This is important especially when you’re converting your military experience to civilian. Make sure you have a list of all of your military training, education, courses, workshops, etc., these can be useful when a job description puts a big emphasis on education.

November 20th LACBA Veterans Project Clinic
In three weeks, on November 20, 2019, the LACBA Veterans Legal Services Project is holding its next self-help workshop and legal clinic, covering cleaning criminal records and clearing outstanding tickets and warrants. We are back to our regular location and time for this clinic- 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m at Bob Hope Patriotic Hall (1816 S. Figueroa, Los Angeles, CA 90015). Attached to this email is a flyer for the clinic with a list of supporting documents that each participating veteran should obtain prior to arrival on the day of the clinic.
