Job Description for Registered Nurse Patient Safety Specialist
SCOPE
We are seeking a Registered Nurse to interact with staff to include nurses, physicians, etc. to collaborate and assess patient safety/risk concerns and implement solutions. All patient safety specialist activities will be performed in a Military treatment facility working with medical professionals and patients with all degrees of medical conditions

LOCATION: This position is based in San Diego, CA 92134

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES For Registered Nurse Patient Safety Specialist
Duties include, but are not limited to the following:
Provides Patient Safety training including classroom and On-the-Job-Training for staff.
Collects, collates displays and performs patient safety trend analysis and other computations using MS Office suite and the Department of Defense software system
Uses patient safety methodology including RCA, cause and effect analysis, FEMA and tracer methodology to implement performance improvement initiatives across varied medical disciplines.
Reviews and analyzes trend reports for demonstration of adherence and compliance with regulatory standards to include Joint Commission, Medical Inspector General, BUMED, DOD, etc.
Uses data and epidemiological tools to assist staff in the analysis of data from adverse/sentinel events, close calls/near misses, etc.
Plans, develops and implements the commands patient safety program to include Patient Safety Week activities, periodic risk assessments and appraisals and regular rounding to assess regulatory compliance
Independently completes root cause analysis – RCA investigations, corrective action, and report of findings.
Participates in survey readiness assessments and preparations including plan recommendations to the Commission
Review and monitor implementation of patient safety/risk management policies to include National Patient Goals, DOD patient Safety Culture Surveys, sentinel events and FEMA corrective actions.
Prepare briefings of Patient safety activities for the command, BUMED, DOD, etc.
Interacts with staff to include nurses, physicians, etc. to collaborate and assess patient safety/risk concerns and implement solutions.

Required Experience For Registered Nurse Patient Safety Specialist
QUALIFICATIONS
Possess a baccalaureate degree in Nursing
Have a minimum of one year of experience working in risk management, patient safety, or quality improvement programs to include experience in the clinical setting or direct care environment within the last three years
Possess a current unrestricted licensee to practice as a registered nurse (or higher) in the state of California
Familiar with the MS office suite and ability to create reports, spreadsheets, and presentations using these tools
Requires the ability to obtain a security clearance. Security clearances may only be granted to U.S. citizens. Applicants who accept a conditional offer of employment may be subject to government security investigation(s) and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information.
Be fluent (read, write, speak) in the English language

ADDITIONAL PREFERRED SKILLS For Registered Nurse Patient Safety Specialist
Military background with knowledge of military policies and procedures.
Active Security clearance
TeamSTEPPS certification
Certified Professional in Patient Safety (CPPS)
Possesses experience with process improvement concepts and tools, group facilitation, data management, and analysis including graphic development and presentations is highly desirable.
Knowledge of regulatory/accreditation requirements is desirable.
