Great Article: 50 Best Veteran - Hiring Companies + Tips on Getting Hired

Finding a job can be hard. Finding a job with a company that doesn’t understand your military service can be a lot harder. It’s up to veterans to bridge the gap between their experience and civilian recruiters with a well-prepared résumé and interview. But building that bridge is easier with companies —such as the employers on our “Best for Vets: Employers” list —that try to meet you at least halfway.

Advice on Transitioning to the Civilian Work Force + Webinar Tues. 8/29

At military job fairs, it's about them, not you

By BILL MURPHY JR. for Stars and Stripes Published: August 22, 2011 WASHINGTON

http://www.stripes.com/blogs/stripes-central/stripes-central-1.8040/at-military-job-fairs-it-s-about-them-not-you-1.152900

If you’ve been to an armed forces career fair you’ve seen them: aspiring applicants, resumes in hand, walking through the hall in their military uniforms.

Bad idea, says Chad Storlie, a retired Army Reserve lieutenant colonel and the author of the books, “Combat Leader to Corporate Leader” and “Battlefield to Business Success.”

The key to professionally transitioning to the civilian world is to translate your military accomplishments to civilianspeak, and show employers that you understand their problems and you’ve got solutions, Storlie said in an interview. Whether you’re a private or a retiring colonel, wearing a uniform shows you’re more focused on your identity as a soldier than on how you’ll find a fit in the private sector.

“An employer is evaluating how well you will fit into their organization, not how well you fit into the military,” said Storlie.

Everything about how you present yourself —from the clothes you wear to the resume you’ve crafted to the questions you ask should demonstrate that you’re committed to making the transition, not holding onto the past.

With unemployment among post-9/11 veterans hovering around 13 percent, Storlie is hosting a free webinar Tuesday on how to make the most of military career fairs. The presentation, from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. ET, can be accessed at https://www3.gotomeeting.com/register/775480182, and will be archived afterward on Storlie’s website, combattocorporate.com.

Overall, there are three key things veterans can do to stand out at events like these, said Storlie, who was a Special Forces officer who served in Iraq and Bosnia and who earned his MBA from Georgetown University before going to work at General Electric and Union Pacific.

First, research the employers who will be at the event ahead of time. Dig through the investor relations sections of their websites, scour public records, and read what media have written about them. You want to be able to articulate the challenges they’re facing at least as well as their current employees can.

Second, don’t follow a spray-and-pray strategy of simply dropping off resumes to every company you see. Instead, it’s probably better to focus on a handful of employers you think you’d really like to work for.

“Approach a career fair with a plan,” Storlie said, “understanding, ‘these two are my primary companies, and these are my alternates.’”

Finally, craft and rehearse your elevator speech —who you are, what your accomplishments are, and most importantly, how you can help the company solve its problems.

“Those things will make a person stand out, because you’ve changed the game,” Storlie said. “For the HR rep or the hiring manager at that booth, that’s completely refreshing. Normally they’re trying to sell their company. It’s a complete reversal of the norm that they’re used to.”

"Ask the Military Hiring Expert" - Open Q&A Webinars (9/5 and 9/16)

Have questions on where to find veterans to hire? Struggling to attract more veterans to your organization? Want to know if there are best practices in supporting veterans with disabilities? Want to know which Military Occupational Codes would be a good fit for your open positions?

The Value Of a Veteran offers twice-monthly opportunities to "Ask the Military Hiring Expert" all of your questions. This session is FREE, and you do need to register to attend. Go to www.TheValueOfaVeteran.com/webinars to register.

The above is a LIVE webinar. Other pre-recorded webinars available on the site include:

It's Not About Patriotism – Why Hiring Veterans Just Makes Good Business Sense

Need motivation and direction to jump-start a military recruiting initiative? Facing a tough-sell with key stakeholders? Unsure of all the financial incentives (tax credits, etc.) and benefits available to those companies that hire veterans? Then this Webinar is for you.
What you will learn:

  • "Myths versus truths" concerning hiring veterans
  • The top business reasons to develop a veteran hiring initiative (including tax credits, compliance requirements, cost reimbursements, etc.)
This webinar is for recruiters who are interested in pursuing military veterans as part of a larger hiring strategy but who are unsure of how to find these veterans and where to focus their time and budget in order to achieve the highest return on investment. What you will learn:
  • The timeline for a typical military transition (knowing this can keep your pipelines filled and can offer additional cost savings in terms of relocation and marketing)
  • An overview of military-specific applicant sourcing options

Hiring Veterans with Disabilities

If military veterans in general are an under-tapped resource, disabled military veterans are practically invisible to employers. Though they may have lost limbs, vision, and/or hearing, have short-term memory loss, or are disfigured, they still desire to contribute and have a lot to offer – if employers make the effort to reach out and accommodate.
  • WHY employers should include veterans and veterans with disabilities in their recruiting strategy
  • WHAT the term "service-disabled veteran" means
  • WHAT support and incentives are available to employers (government and civilian) to facilitate recruiting veterans with disabilities
  • WHERE to find concentrations of veterans with disabilities to recruit
  • HOW to attract veterans with disabilities to your company
  • HOW to change attitudinal barriers to employing veterans with disabilities

Translating the Military Resume and Interviewing Tips

Just because your HVAC business is in land-locked Tucson, Arizona doesn't mean an "Anti-Submarine Warfare Control System Level II Technician" wouldn't be a great asset to your team. Making sense of "foreign" job titles and cryptic job codes on the typical military resume is hard enough. Trying to determine a service member's transferable skills based on a 5 minute conversation at a crowded job fair is even harder.
This webinar will empower you with tools and techniques to be able to:
  • Determine the types of career fields offered through the military and how they correspond with your hiring needs
  • Realize the certification and credentialing options offered by the military
  • Understand the differences between officer and enlisted grades, including levels of responsibility and salary expectations
  • Map your hiring needs to military skill sets
  • Translate the veteran's Military Occupational Code
  • Ask great questions that will more directly help you determine the service member's transferable skills
  • Avoid a lawsuit (also known as "questions you should never ask a veteran during the hiring process")

Marketing to Attract the Military Applicant

Does your company use the same marketing materials, techniques, messages and career web pages to recruit college seniors as compared to experienced hires? Many companies have learned the value in customizing the applicant experience to attract different populations. This webinar covers things you can do to attract the military candidate to your company.
What you will learn:
  • Themes and messages to use in your materials that will resonate with military veterans
  • Updates to make to your career website that will attract the military

The Return of Veterans to Campus – The Powerful Impact of the Post 9/11 GI Bill and What Higher Education Institutions Can Do to Prepare and Reap the Benefits

Have you heard? There is a new and very generous Post 9/11 G.I. Bill that came into effect in August 2009. This bill is expected to incent a huge number of military veterans to head to college over the next few years. More than 25,000 veterans signed up for the Post 9/11 G.I. Bill within the first two weeks!  What should colleges and universities be doing now to prepare for a return of military veterans to campus in the coming years?
In this 2-part seminar you will learn:
  • The significant incentives of the new Post 9/11 G.I. Bill and why these incentives are expected to drive veterans to pursue higher education
  • The 18 "Best Practices" (policies, programs, etc.) for higher education institutions to adopt that will make your organization stand out as "veteran friendly" in the minds of transitioning service members
  • Grants and other financial incentives for putting these programs in place
  • Traditional and creative ways to market your college/university to the military community (cost, low-cost and no cost methods covered)

Avoid Being the "Starter Employer" – How To Retain Veterans After You've Hired Them

Are you experiencing a higher-than-expected turnover of your veteran employees? Or, do you already have a military hiring practice already in place, but you are losing your investment because the veterans are not staying long term? Learn how to become more than a "starter employer." Become a longer-term career opportunity.
What you will learn:
  • Common frustrations military veterans have with their first employer
  • Best practices for integrating military veterans into your organization
  • Programs and policies to support veterans serving in the National Guard and Reserves

URGENT! IMPORTANT REMINDER - AGENT ORANGE CLAIM FILING DEADLINE

from THE KITCHEN TABLE GANG TRUST

-----Agent Orange claim filing deadline August 30th-----

Vietnam-era veterans who have medical diagnoses for three presumptive conditions related to Agent Orange exposure need to file their disability claims with the Department of Veterans Affairs by Aug. 30 in order to qualify for up to one year of retroactive benefits.

The three diseases recently added to VA's list of presumptive conditions related to Agent Orange exposure or other herbicides during the Vietnam War are ischemic heart disease, hairy cell and other B-cell leukemias, and Parkinson's disease.

"Veterans who suffer from these presumptive conditions can apply for disability benefits at any time," said Verna Jones, director of The American Legion's Veterans Affairs & Rehabilitation Division. "But they need to apply by the Aug. 30 deadline in order to possibly get up to a year's worth of benefits retroactively,"

Widows and widowers whose spouses have died from Agent Orange presumptive conditions may also qualify for retroactive benefits and are encouraged to file for dependent indemnity compensation by Aug. 30.

Veterans can file for disability claims online at VA's Agent Orange Fast Track claims Processing System at:

Veterans and Mesothelioma

The veterans of the United States military branches, including the U.S. Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, and others have served their country in times of war and peace, giving their time, effort, and sometimes their lives as part of their service. They have the same right to the best in medical care that is afforded to all in our country. Mesothelioma, a disease with no known cure, has felled many U.S. veterans, and the rights of these veterans to receive compensation for this work-related disease should be upheld.

Medical Care for Veterans Is Lacking

Unfortunately, many veterans are not receiving the medical care or disability benefits to which they are entitled. For example, some 600,000 VA claims for federal benefits are pending with the Veterans Administration, languishing in a bureaucratic morass for years at a time. These include more than 123,000 disability claims of vets of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Veterans with asbestos-induced mesothelioma are facing the same obstacles.

Millions of Veterans Exposed to Asbestos

It is now apparent that hundreds of thousands — perhaps millions — of veterans were exposed to the toxic material asbestos as part of their military service. Asbestos was present in many products used by military members and civilian contractors when they built military facilities and ships (asbestos exposure navy ships) or maintained military vehicles.

Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA) Featured in Time Magazine

Join IAVA in celebrating the release of TIME's The New Greatest Generation, profiling IAVA Member Veterans as the new face of American leadership.

After almost 10 years of war, this extraordinary TIME cover story profiles Iraq and Afghanistan veterans who are defining the next generation of leadership in politics, business and social entrepreneurship.

Five IAVA Member Veterans, including Founder and Executive Director Paul Rieckhoff and Board Member Wes Moore, are featured in The New Greatest Generation by columnist Joe Klein about how young war veterans are redefining leadership at home.

IAVA Executive Director and Founder Paul Rieckhoff brought into focus the urgency of IAVA’s work on Thursday night as Member Veterans joined leaders of the veteran and civilian community at the Time Warner Center in New York City for the official unveiling of TIME magazine’s New Greatest Generation cover story. Rieckhoff praised IAVA Board Member Wes Moore, and Member Veterans Liz McNally and John Gallina — three fellow vets featured in the cover story — for their leadership, and cited them as examples of the type of talent and ingenuity veterans can bring to the private sector upon their return from service.

“This is a historic moment for IAVA and for all Iraq and Afghanistan veterans. The TIME cover story proves the potential of a powerful new generation of American leaders. The five of us are humbled to have been chosen to represent our brother and sisters in the veterans community. But we are just the tip of the spear. The “Innovation Generation” embodies the diversity, skill and energy of all 2.3 million Iraq and Afghanistan veterans. It shows the entire world that veterans are not a charity, we’re an investment. We’ve led America in combat overseas, and we’re ready to lead at home,” said IAVA Founder and Executive Director Paul Rieckhoff.

Read the article, meet the veterans, and find out more about IAVA here: http://iava.org/faces-next-greatest-generation

About IAVA

IAVA is the country's first and largest nonprofit, nonpartisan organization for veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and has more than 200,000 Member Veterans and civilian supporters nationwide.

Our Mission & Vision:

We are a 21st Century veterans’ organization dedicated to standing with the veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan from their first day home through the rest of their lives. We strive to build an empowered generation of veterans who provide sustainable leadership for our country and their communities.

Our Impact:

The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are entering their ninth and tenth years respectively. Over 2.2 million Americans have served in Iraq or Afghanistan, and thousands have been deployed multiple times. IAVA is focused on addressing mental health injuries, a stretched VA system, inadequate health care for female veterans, and GI Bill educational benefits.

We focus our impact in four critical areas for new veterans and their families - Health, Education, Employment and Community – with a three-pronged strategy:
  • Assistance: We create, optimize and expand assistance to veterans in the areas of Health, Education, Employment and Community.
  • Awareness: We create awareness around the challenges and opportunities facing veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan.
  • Advocacy: We create and influence public policy so veterans and their families have increased access to Health, Education, Employment and Community.
In these areas, IAVA provides valuable resources and empowers veterans to connect with one another, fostering a strong and lasting community from their first day home through the rest of their lives.

Transitioning from a Military to Civilian Resume: Helpful Resource for Job Seekers

From http://www.careeronestop.org/militarytransition/resumeWriter.aspx

The skills and experience you gain in the military are in high demand in civilian jobs. But describing your military experiences to a perspective employer can be difficult.

To get started, use these resources:

Don’t overlook your skills.

You’ve likely gained a wide variety of skills in the military. Your job when writing your resume is to highlight your assets for employers. Include examples of the following types of skills:
  • Technical skills. Military careers such as a telecommunications technician, financial management technician, mechanic, healthcare specialist all have closely related civilian careers. The technical skills you developed in your military career in these and other military occupations should be included on your resume.
  • Discipline skills. The discipline skills that you developed in the military are highly valued by civilian employers.
  • Leadership skills. Any leadership experience or training that you acquired in the military is also highly valued by civilian employers.

Follow a standard resume format.

Use a resume sample or template as your guide. If you don’t have civilian work experience, consider using a functional resume that addresses your skills rather than the positions you have held. For a walk-through of the resume writing process, visit CareerOneStop’s Resume Guide.

For Employers: How To Create Effective Online Job Posts

Writing effective job titles and descriptions

Excerpted from the Indeed.com blog at http://blog.indeed.com/2011/08/11/writing-effective-job-titles-and-descriptions

One of the best ways to get the most from online job sites and receive truly targeted job seeker traffic is by using detailed, job seeker-friendly job titles and descriptions.

Because sites like Indeed.com are search engines, effective job titles and detailed job descriptions help to make the best match possible with job seekers’ search terms, resulting in more qualified candidates clicking on and applying to your jobs.

A vague job title or a description with only a few sentences gives the job site limited information to use when matching your job to job seekers’ search queries. This makes it difficult for qualified job seekers to find your jobs.

An effective job title and description:
  • Improves the quality and volume of qualified candidates you receive
  • Enables job seekers to better qualify themselves for the job.

Job postings are often your first chance to make a meaningful impression on a job seeker; titles and descriptions can greatly influence qualified candidates’ perceptions of your company and their decision to apply.

To get the most out of your jobs, keep these guidelines in mind when writing your job title and description:

Job title
  • Avoid using internal titles that don’t accurately describe the job. Job seekers may misunderstand abbreviations or acronyms, and they’re less likely to search for them.
  • Describe the type of work being performed. If you’re hiring salespeople, specify what they will be selling, or include your industry. For example: “Sales Representative –Pharmaceuticals” or “Pharmaceutical Sales Representative” is more effective than just “Sales Representative.” If possible, mention the level of work (for example, “Entry-level Accountant”).
Job description

When writing your job descriptions, use a style that communicates your company’s character and values. This is an invaluable way to market your employer brand and engage candidates.
  • Job descriptions without relevant keywords and detail can make it difficult for qualified candidates to find your jobs. If they do view the posting, they won’t have enough information to determine whether they are qualified, or if the job is a good fit.
  • Alternatively, a description that consists of an unnecessarily long list of skill and qualification requirements can make false matches on Indeed, or dissuade job seekers from applying.
  • Some best practices for your job descriptions include:
    • Keep job descriptions concise, but provide enough detail–with relevant keywords and terms –so that Indeed can make a proper match on your job with a job seeker’s query.
    • Describe the types of activities and responsibilities required by the job so job seekers can self-qualify themselves (thus improving your candidate quality).
      • Cite specific educational/certification requirements.
      • Specify desired years of experience. Indicate how the job functions within the organization or who the job reports to.
    • Give job seekers a sense of your organization’s style and culture. This may also include an overview of employee benefits, salary, schedule and other perks.
When writing job titles and descriptions, Indeed.com's Industry Employment Trends can also be helpful in identifying top keywords and the most popular job titles for your industry or job category.

Joint Base Langley-Eustis Job Fair: 9/8 (Ft. Eustis, VA)

Help our troops in Afghanistan by sending shaving cream!

KITCHEN TABLE GANG TRUST Sets Up New Operation Shaving Cream Fund

Marines in Afghanistan have requested that people send shaving cream for them to mark mines and IEDs.

In response to a community effort to support U.S. troops stationed in Afghanistan, the U.S. Marines in the 1st Battalion, 5th Marines' Cherokee Company are using shaving cream to mark IEDs (improvised explosive devices), and there has been overwhelming community support to send boxes of shaving cream to our troops stationed overseas in an effort to help save lives and limbs.

The Kitchen Table Gang is positioned to facilitate worthwhile projects such as this one and saw this project as the perfect opportunity to provide the vehicle to organize a internet-wide effort to show support of our troops. Anyone can make donation to the fund, and the Kitchen Table Gang will help facilitate purchasing and shipping the shaving cream to the troops. The effort has a goal of 10,000 cans, but the Kitchen Table Gang will continue to accept donations for this effort as long as there is a need. We will continue to update our newsletter with the progress of this initiative and relay the thanks we receive from our troops.

First Lt. Paul Herdener is deployed with Camp Pendleton, CA-based 1/5's Cherokee Company as a heavy weapons platoon commander said the public must remember that service members in Afghanistan are risking lives and limbs. "If we can prevent that from happening with a can of shaving cream, we need to get as much over there as we can," he said.

It should be noted that the shaving cream will be sent to soldiers and Marines throughout Afghanistan - not just the Marines of 1/5. What began as a project in the Rotary Club of Gainesville, GA has spread to other organizations and become a full-blown campaign.

To make a donation to the Operation Shaving Cream Fund, either mail a check to the Kitchen Table Gang Trust at 42922 Avenue 12, Madera, CA 93636-8866 or donate online using the PayPal icon on the first page of our website.

Thank you very much,

VA Acquisition Academy Seeking Wounded Vets for the 2011 Class - No Degree Required

The VA Acquisition Academy  is currently recruiting candidates without a degree or less than 24 credits only for the 2011 class that  starts 10/10/2011.  Start with sending  your  resume  to kasey.kazakavich@va.gov.  If you meet the criteria we need to hear from you no later than Thursday by noon.

In general we are looking for wounded veterans, prefer combat wounded vets, who have a high-school degree and are motivated to complete a rigorous 3-year program. The first year is designed to work through the business credits required for the contract specialist career field. It includes the academic training, plus mental strength conditioning and a variety of other training (leadership, soft skills). The second and third years is designed to teach them the specific technical training as contract specialist, plus the other things mentioned in the attachment.

The training in the first year will be strictly here in Frederick, VA. Those selected will be here for that time. Whether they choose to move their families here will be up to them…the second and third years include both classroom time here in Frederick as well as job rotations out in the operational arena (at a VA site somewhere around the country). At the end of the third year, we will PCS them to their final location. They must be willing to sign a mobility agreement stating that we will move them where the need is (we do work with them much like an assignment officer in the military – they choose their top 3 locations from a list of available locations, and we match them up). We do not have housing here (we are not on a military base, and the closest base, Ft Detrick, does not offer military housing, even for their soldiers). Many of the veterans might be eligible for BAH and other benefits under various benefit programs.

Patriot Golf Day & the Folds of Honor Foundation get increased support from Pinnacle

Hi Lucy,

I wanted to let you know about Patriot Golf Day, an exciting national campaign to honor the sacrifices of military veterans and their families. The idea is simple, during Labor Day weekend, golfers across the country are encouraged to add $1 to their greens fees. From that humble ask, more than $8 million has been raised over the four years for Folds of Honor Foundation, a national nonprofit organization that salutes the sacrifice of fallen and disabled service members by ensuring their families are not left behind through scholarships and other assistance.

Since 2009, Pinnacle has been Going the Distance for military families by supporting Folds of Honor in its mission to help these families. Pinnacle provides funding and in-kind donations to help raise funds and awareness for Folds of Honor’s vital mission. This year Pinnacle is taking their support a step further by featuring the Folds of Honor logo on new Pinnacle Gold packaging (photo attached). In advance of Patriot Golf Day, I’d love to provide you with a pack of the special Pinnacle Gold golf balls that feature the Folds of Honor logo to share with your readers.

This Patriot Golf Day, we hope you put Pinnacle in play and join the mission to ensure the families of servicemen and women who have given life and limb serving our country receive the educational opportunities they deserve by visiting www.foldsofhonor.org. You can also learn more about Pinnacle’s efforts to support Folds of Honor by liking their new Facebook page.

Please let me know if you have any questions on Patriot Gold Day or Pinnacle’s support of the Folds of Honor Foundation. Thanks in advance for your consideration.

Best,
Kevin

Our main mission is to attend the funeral services of fallen American heroes as invited guests of the family. Each mission we undertake has two basic objectives:

Show our sincere respect for our fallen heroes, their families, and their communities.
Shield the mourning family and their friends from interruptions created by any protestor or group of protestors.

We accomplish the latter through strictly legal and non-violent means.

To those of you who are currently serving and fighting for the freedoms of others, at home and abroad, please know that we are backing you.  We honor and support you with every mission we carry out, and we are praying for a safe return home for all.

Bridging the Gap Between Military Families & Civilians: Washington Post Conversation with USO's Rear Admiral Frank Thorp

On August 3rd, Rear Admiral Frank Thorp hosted an online forum about bridging the gap between military and civilian communities. This chat is part of The Washington Post's "The Mil Life," an ongoing chat series directed to military families that takes place every Wednesday at noon ET.

One participant's comment caught our attention:

"Several years ago, I worked at a dot com at the height of the dot com craze. We had a couple of Army reservists on staff, who were truly excellent coworkers because they did what needed to be done efficiently with a minimum of fuss and drama (which I attributed directly to their military training). Both were eventually deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq, and the rest of us certainly felt much more invested in a peaceful outcome to both situations, knowing people who were over there. (Both returned safely, I'm glad to say.) But I think this is another good example of bridging the gap between civilians and military."

Important Keywords to Include in Your Resume: Market Yourself Effectively

Words are the name of the game when it comes to resumes and you need to be strategic in your choice of them. Job seekers often put keywords on their resumes, but how do you know which words to choose and which ones to leave out? Here is a brief list of some of the most overused words on resumes. Avoid them when possible and choose some more creative alternatives. After knowing what words to avoid you should be ready to craft an eye-catching resume.

1. Accomplished. Yes, we all know every job seeker is accomplished, otherwise you would be fired from every job you’ve ever had if you never accomplished anything. Instead try: Peak Performer.

2. Results-Driven. We all know that everyone’s professional resume starts out with Results-Driven (Insert your job title here). The only problem is in the job search game you don’t want to sound like everyone else. You want to stand out from the crowd. Instead try: Performance-Driven.

3. Successful. This is another overused phrase on resumes. We all want to communicate how successful we’ve been so a new employer will think highly of us, but let’s look at some alternative wording versus just coming out and saying hey there, I’m a success. Instead try: Best In Class, Award-Winning, or Top-Performer.

4. Skillful or Skilled. These are so boring. Seriously, I hate to see resumes with these words on them. I cannot even tell you how incredibly dull these words are and I am sure you can come up with something way more creative for your resume. If you can’t think of anything try my recommendations or if you don’t like them use a thesaurus. Instead try: Talented, Sharp, or Resourceful.

5. Problem-Solver. Can I just say that this is a given… We are ALL problem solvers. If you are human, you are a problem solver it is just part of human nature. Does it really need to be said on your resume? I think not. Instead try: Troubleshooter, Forward-Thinking, or Visionary Leader.

6. And last but not least Dedicated and Dependable. Again I have to say boring, boring, boring. Spice up your resume with something creative. Instead try: High-Potential, Quality-Driven, and Dynamic.
